MATAURA.

A ball in connection with the opening of the freezing-works was held on Thursday, the 18th. The management of the affair was in the hands of a committee consisting _ of Messrs Kingdon, f. S. Shanks, Collins, Williams, Hamilton, Hay (secretary), Arnett, Cooper, W. Y. Smith, and Milne. The success of the dance must have been very gratifying to these gentlemen who worked energetically to that end. There must have been fully eighty couples present. At one time seventeen sets were counted on the floor. The catering was in the hands of Mr Kingsland, of Invercargill, and was done in his very best style. Mr Arnett performed the duties of M.C. admirably. I believe the promoters intend to make the ball an annual affair.

The Ferndale school has been closed owing to an epidemic of influenza. On Saturday, 20th, the Mataura and Waikaia football teams had a match on the former’s ground. It was won by Mataura with 11 points, against Waikaia’s 2. Hutchison at half played a splendid game. The other backs played safely, but should kick more than they did. For Mataura Arnett, Smith, and Catherill were the pick of the forwards ; Burnside and Jones played well at half, as also did Cameron and Wade, wing three-quarters. The losers all played a sterling game.
