MATAURA.
A few enterprising prospectors have found payable gold on the island just below the Mataura bridge. Quite a number of claims have been already pegged off. Messrs Jarvis and Beadle have determined to turn .the course of the Waimumu. They are confident that its bed contains gold. On Monday afternoon a lad, a son of Mr Denne, blacksmith, met with a - rather
nasty accident. He was sitting, along with other boys, upon a log which was being dragged behind a dray when the log by some means passed over his leg, tearing the flesh so severely that the bone was exposed; he is, however, on the road to recovery. Mr Townley, an old resident of the Waimumu district, passed away on Saturday last. The Mataura footballers journeyed to Gore on Saturday, and inflicted a defeat upon the Goreites to the tune of eight points. The day was rather wet for good back play, but some very fast play was indulged in by the forwards, the combination of the Mataura forwards winning the game. For the winners Catherill, Carroll, Shanks, Macdonald, and Burnside played well, while Greig, Brooks, Donaldson, and Boyds played smartly for Gore. Mataura plays Waikaia on Saturday, and on the Queen’s birthday, the first and second fifteens journey to Invercargill to try conclusions with Biverton and Star second. The formal opening of our freezing works took place on Thursday, and caused some stir, a special train from Invercargill conveying a large number of shareholders to Mataura to witness the opening ceremonies. After the visitors, in whom neiMy every part of Southland was represented, had viewed the works, luncheon was served in the loading shed, Mr J. Turnbull, chairman of directors, presiding. A number of capital speeches were made, and the hope confidently expressed that from the natural advantages of the site, and the saving that would result from water being the motive power, the works would prove highly remunerative.
