OTAUTAU.

Mr D. McLaren who has been stock manager for the Merrivale estate for a number of years, lately bought out Mr J. Smith of the Otautau hotel, and entered on a new line. About 40 of the employees of Mr J. C. Ellis met at the Otautau hotel on Friday, 12th inst., when Mr R. McDonald, in a few concise words, presented Mr McLaren with a gold albert and locket and Mrs McLaren with a beautiful gold brooch as a slight token of their esteem. A. number of the residents of the town and district then sat down to a capital spread, and a most social evening was spent. The School Committee met on the loth, and by the casting vote of the chairman, Miss M. G. Greenslade was appointed mistress of the school. She was chosen from 13 applicants.
