MAIN HIGHWAYS.
RECENT WORK IN THE DISTRICT Among the works which the Main Highways Board reports having carried out during October are the following:— Wfellington-Auckland, via Taranaki (No. 9 Highway district).- —Stokes Yal-, ley to Paekakariki: The 7$ chains recently widened has been completed and metalled. At 24M 60 four chains of widening, formation, and metalling has been completed. At 24M 40 a curve has been widened, banked and metalled. At 29M 30 and at 30M 15 curves have r been banked and metalled; at 25M 15 a grouted stonewall has been built. The turning place at the Summit.'has been given a coat of metal. At the foot of Paekakariki Hill the turn off to the township has been shaped and metalled. Hutt County—Paekakariki to Waikanae: 6 chains has been sealed with bituminous emulsion, and 1 mile 47 chains with bitumen (second coat). Horowhenua County—Waikanae to Manakau. A start has been made with the bituminous surfacing work on D’Aths and Bevan’s deviations, 15 chains having been completed. Manakau to Levin: The Waikawa railway crossing has been sealed. Waikawa bridge: The three centre piers of the bridge were completed, and a start made with the north abutment. Kuku bridge: The centre pier and both abutments of this bridge are complete, and the. deck slab will be placed shortly. Levin to Palmerston North, via Shannon. —Horowhenua County: Levin to county boundary at Tokomaru, 20 chains of widening and shoulder formation, have been completed. KairangaCounty: County boundary at Tokomaru to Palmerston North, widening work is being carried out near Palmerston North. Foxton to Shannon: Shannon Borough, 15 chains has been • widened and metalled.
