SATURDAY’S MATCHES.

LEVIN DEFEAT WERAROA BY 18 RUNS. OTAKI HAVE "THREE-POINT WIN OVER PARAPARAUMU. A strong westerly wind made conditions unpleasant for the cricket matches in the district on Saturday, but there were some individual performances of high merit. At the Park Domain, the Levin team had a close win over Weraroa, whose tail wagged vigorously, 20 being put on for the last, wicket, so that Levin only obtained their victory by a margin of 18 runs. The match between Otaki and Paraparaumu was played at Otaki and resulted in a win for the home team by four wickets and 76 runs.

LEVIN v. WERAROA. Batsmen were at a disadvantage, owing to the strength and gustiness of the breeze; but some notable bowling performances were put up in the game between Levin and Weraroa, Levin batted first and compiled 111. Pringle made a fine stand for his 35, which included three fours. The other players to reach double figures were Harvey 21, Baumber 18 and Moodie 11 not out. Harvey was responsible for two sixes and Baumber for a six. Bull was in great bowling forip, and took five of Levin’s wickets for 38 runs. Weraroa made 93, the best batting tallies being those of O’Connor, who was caught by Sutherland off Hunter at 32, and France, who made 24 and played into Bishop’s hands off Baumber. O’Connor hit two sixes and a four; France two fours. The bowling in thi-s inning > was remarkable for the fact that it opened with six maidens in succession, during which two wickets were taken. The bowlers responsible were Field and Baumber; the first wicket fell to Field, in the fourth over, and the second to Baumber in the fifth over. Baumber’s in the fifth over. Baumber’s performance at the crease was just two runs better than Bull’s, as his analysis read: Five for 31. Following are the detailed scores: — LEVIN. CRICKET NEXT SATURDAY. There is an erroneous impression abroad that the district fixtures are to be postponed on account of the M.C.C. match at Wellington. This is not the case, the matches which are to be played on Saturday being as follows: — Weraroa v. Otaki, at Otaki; Shannon v. Paraparaumu, at Shannon; Levin a bye.

OTAKI v. PARAPARAUMU. This match was played at Otaki on a grass-matting wicket, which was rather dead after the heavy rain of the night before. Otaki batted first and made 96, chiefly owing to the free batting of Atmore, whose 45 included a six and four boundaries. Paraparaumu made 41, McCaw (12) alone reaching double figures. The home side closed their second innings with six, wickets down for 43, and the visitors made 'a sporting hit-or-miss event (mostly miss) of their second flutter,

notching 22, thus leaving Otaki winners by 76 runs and four wickets. Scores: — Otaki—lst Innings. Bevan, b Thompson 0 Sievers, b Lynch • 9 Atmore, b Lynch 45 A.
