NATIONAL JERSEY SHOW AND SALE.

REMARKABLY SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. Held on the Claudelands Showgrounds, Hamilton, in the centre of the, great dairying district of the Waikato, the seventh National Jersey Show and sale attracted a record entry and a record attendance. '

The judging of the various Hasses was completed on the morning of \the first day, Wednesday, 23th September. Messrs F. W. Cornwall, Bell Block, Taranaki, and A. E. Alissen, Hamilton, were the respective judges and they had some enormous classes to put tbroufgll, the itotal entry comprising 281 head. One of the most attractive classes of all was that for a group of three yearling bulls. The cup for this class was won by an outstanding group of three bred by Mr Harry Salway, of Hua Brook, B’ell Block, and all sired by his imported bull, Victor’s Handsome Prince for which he j>aid 1000 guineas at auction some years ago. Messrs Griffith Bros., of Levin, secured second prize with a group all sired by another imported bull in Marshal Aldan, and the third prize group were three sons of Beechland’s Prince Charlie bred and exhibited by Air W. T. Luxton. In the single classes the entries were enormous. In a record class of yearling bulls, Mr H. Salway was , both first and second, the prizewinners being from his winning group

of-three. Mr J. S. Jones* also of Bell Block, secured third prize with one of the bulls from his fourth prize winning group sired by Sybil’s Volunteer (imp.) •The two-year-old class was another particularly strong one. Air C. G. C. Dermer, Cheltenham,, produced an out-

standing bull in this class in, Waipiko Conqueror sired by Vivandiere’s Prince and from Waipiko Chlorine, 638 lb. fat. Vivandiere’s-'Pi'.nee is out of one of the 10001 b. butterfat cows of the breed so that this bull in addition to being an exceptional type is remarkably well bred for production. In the resulting sale he made the top price of the day when lie was purchased under the hammer at 227 guineas by Air W. C. A!ear3, of Nghrua. In the two-year-olds, Alessrs Griffith Bros. (Levin) secured second place with a sou of Marshal Aldan. This bull was afterwards purchased by Air E. D. AieLennan, of Papakuva, at 92

guineas. Third went s to Woodstock’s Somes, a son of Waipiko' Genuine, bred and exhibited by Airs A. Banks and Son, Kiwitea. Another particularly well bred butterfat bull, ,he realised 106 guineas to the bid of Air W. J. Woollam, Te Kopuni. In the class for bulls three years and over Mr W. 11. Aliers, Rototuna, had an outstanding win with his well-known prize-winning bull, Almadale Golden Ruler. Both his sire and dam were imported from Jersey Island, and both in turn have sired many high elass animals, several of wiiich have excellent butterfat records. This bulPeventually was awarded the,. Grand Championship of the Show, the Reserve going to Waipiko Conqueror. Almadale Golden Ruler was keenly competed for when he came up in the early part of the catalogue and he realised 221 guineas. An ex-

ccllent type of bull in Mr H. W. Le .Bailly's sgven-year-old Iviy’s Golden ’Glory was placed second to the Grand Champion in his class. This bull already lias to his credit eight C.O.M. daughters, and, under the- circumstances, his price was a disappointing one, Mr C. A. Parker securing him at 50 guineas. Another fine type of seven-year-old bull was placed third —Mr Harold Moreland’s Ilavvkesbury Gale of pure imported blood —eventually selling to Mr A. E. Missen. as agent at 45 guineas. Bulls of. good type, if well supported with good butterfat records, were keenly competed for, but it-was noticeable that where record backing was not in evidence even bulls of very attractive appearance failed

to illicit the'keen biding of buyers.. Although unplaced in the Show, Mr R. S. Tuck, of Waharoa, catalogued three excellent bulls. These were headed by the five-year-old bull, Holly Oak Superior Swan by The Cygnet and out of Lady Superior, 997 lbs. fat. He was purchased by Mr A. Dewberry, Te Kopuru, at 117 guineas. Mr Tuck abo

received 100 guineas from Mr N. Lockver, Wahnroa, for an excellent young bull in Lively Prince by Marshland's Prince, a full brother to Marshland’s Stylish Princess; 715 lb. fat as a two-vear-old. Lively Prince was cut of Otterburn Lilac, 729 lb. -fat. Ilis three bulls averaged 91 guineas. The linebre.d ‘Majesty’’ bull rising three years in Champ’s Noble Soumise entered by Mr E. G. Toose, Feilding, was purchased for 102 guineas by Mr J. F. Fleming, Dargaville. This was an outstanding type and had, been second in his class, at the Royal Show. He was sired by Noble Soumise, six of whose daughters were placed under semi-offi-cial test this year, and he is a double grandson of Soumise Majesty (imp.) Marshal Aldan, whose sons in tho sale were very keenly competed for, but who. is now rising ten years old, was passed in at auction at a threefigure price. His first son to be sold immediately after realised 92 guineas.

The Westmere breeder, Mr J. Robb, sold 'a twenty-montbs-old son of Jersey Brae Pioneer to the Hon. J. B. Gow, Opotiki, at 85 guineas. The dam of this bull has been under continuous test for the past six years and is again putting up an outstanding record. Mr R. L. Horn, Ohau, sold his wellknown prize-winning bull Ku Ku Owler, six years ©ld, to Mr C. W. (Swainton, Otorohanga, iat ' 81guineais. This great bodied bull is by Ku Ku Major from the famous champion cow, Ku Ku Brooklet, 667 lb. fat. ’ Mrs A. Banks and Son enjoyed a successful sale for their entry of three bulls which averaged 83 guineas. Their seven-year-old herd sire, Waipiko Genuine, a son of Waipiko Gerda, 710 lb.

fat as a three-year-old, was purchased by Messrs Dickes Bros., Taupiri, at 70 guineas. He is by the same sire in Majesty's Eminent as the latest Champion Butterfat bull, Waipiko Journalist. Mr R. J. Johnstone, of Runciman, secured another splendid bull in Sunhill King Olaf, four years, at 80 guineas. Perhaps the keenest bidding of the day was evidenced when Mr J. Malcolm, Te Rapa, led his two-year-old bull, Carhnduft' Victor, into the ring. By Abberley Combination, a full brother to Abberley Naomi, a Avell-known champion cow with 603 lbs. fat to her credit, and claiming as his dam Oarhuduff Silver Lily, 685 lb. fat at three

years of age, this bull Avas sold to Mr P. Godinagh, Bay of Plenty, at 175 guineas. The top price secured by Mr J. S. • Jones, of Bell Block, was 70 guineas for Silverley’s Xenia Pet.
