SPORTING NOTES.

Nominations for ail events at the spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club to be held on Saturday and Monday, October 26th and 28th, will close at 9 p.m. ,on Friday, when forfeit (1 sov.) is also due for the Wellesley Stakes.

‘ Toapaiti is being given easy work in Taranaki, but it is stated that it is doubtful whether he will stand a hard preparation. Richfield is reported to be getting through useful work on the tracks at Hawera and promises to perform well when asked to gallop seriously. Little has been, heard of- Bright Glow since going to Australia and it is now reported that accommodation has been booked for her on the boat leaving Sydney on October 11th, Welkne came into contact with a motor car on the road near Ellerslie on Wednesday and received injuries which necessitated his destruction. Welkne was a six-year-old gelding by The Kelkin-Angelina. Taranaki reports mention that Singer still continues to do all that his mentor asks .of him and it is expected that he will prove capable of being in the firing line at Wavcrley. The Tonbridge-Lady Egletine filly, taken over to Sydney by J. Fryer along with Bright.. Glow, is reported to have shown good form in her gallops. It is not unlikely that the filly will be disposed of in Sydney.

When Sleepy Sol fell in the Kingsland Hurdles at Avondale he injured a stifle and the probability is that he will be unable to compete at the impending Auckland fixture. A leg had been giving trouble prior to the meeting and such might have been responsible for the loss of form.

Yellowhammer, whose sale has been announced, was bred by Mr. Frank Armstrong, and is by Mira from Yellow Bird, dam of Yellow and Black, and half-sister to Halberdier, winner of the New Zealand Cup in 1902. Ycllowhammer had a colt foal by Night Raid at foot when disposed of. At the stud in Australia is a half-, sister by Kilbroney to Ballymena, Limerick, Roserea, and Dunraven. She was the first production of .Medley, being now in her twelfth year. She is known as Golden Mixture, but never raced in the land of her birth, while it is doubtful whether she ever started in Australia.

High Heather, who was recently handed over to V. H. Colello by H. R. ;HeaeoeH. is reported from Hawke’s Bay to be showing out in a strong light in his rehearsals. The gelding, who is engaged at Napier Park at the week- 1 end, might prove capable ,of giving a followed by an increase in the number A younger full-sister to the English Derby and St. Leger Stakes winner, Trigo, is wandering about somewhere in the Panama district, she having been sold for 25gns as a yearling to go to South America. The success of her ■ brother has encouraged someone to make endeavours to secure her for breeding purposes. Prince Otto, the elder half-brother by Nassau, to Eaglet, ; was recently shipped from . Auckland to Gisborne. Like , his well-performeci relative, Prince Otto is owned by Mr. F. Earl, K.C., of Auckland, who still owns him. As a ' three-year-old he was a fairly, good performer, but there was little to enthuse over last season.

Merry Dale, the three-year-old halfbrother by Grandcourt to Wassail. Plain Sailing and Sylvan Dell, who damaged .One of her fetlocks -while being handled, has now .quite recovered from the mishap, comments a Hastings writer. She is a nice evenly turned..filly who shows more size than .her half-sisters, and gives the impression of possessing courage; - The Awapuni horsemen, T. Metcalf and R. G. Stratton, went south to the Geraldine meeting and both got on the winning list. Stratton rode Silver Coot, the winner of the Squatters’ Handicap on the opening day, while Metcalf filled a second berth on Mount Boa and a third on Bulolo. On the second day Metcalf saluted the judge on Mount Boa and filled third berths with Some Toff and Town Bank, so it would appear that he did not want for rides.

Lineage failed to show up in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, but she won the Avondale Stakes by a-nar-row margin. It is stated that she was always well in the picture, and did liev work right at the finish. Lineage (Limond-Merit) is bred-the right way to win races, for Limond is the sire of stayers, and Merit was a very fasl mare in her day. Merit was bred in England and was imported to Nov Zealand by Mr. Y. Riddiford, who bred the winner of the Avondale Stakes, and races her.

The. first foal of the season has made its appearance at Mr. A. Chisholm’.Otautau Stud, and ranks as a descendant of the English sire Woodend from Overdrawn, by Glenculloch —Orders, states a southern writer. So far, Overdrawn has failed to reprQcluce a galloper of her own standard —she was the best of Glenculloch's progeny raised here—but she may mate well with the imported son of Lemberg. Mr. Chisholm owns some promising youngsters by Woodend, one of the number being a daughter of Glentruin. Mr. Nat Williams has in hand Mr. J. B. Gaisford's Call Again and a colt owned by Mr. W. Mcßeth.
