FIRE AT SHANNON.

SHOP AND DWELLING GUTTED. Au alarm of fire was given in Shannon at 3.45 on Wednesday morning, : when the shop with dwelling of three rooms attached in Ballanee Street, owned by Mrs McPherson, was badly gutted. • The premises' were occupied by Miss Scorrar and Mr Puekey, who arrived from Auckland on Wednesday and had rented the building with the intention of carrying oh a business of dressmakI ing. home cooking, supper rooms, etc. The building had been occupied by Mr Puekey since Friday, but on Tuesday he went to Palmerston North by train to transact business, .Miss Scorrar remaining at-the shop. She retired about 11 p.m. and at 3.3,0 a.m. was awakened by a noise and found 1 the back portion of the building to be on fire. She immediately called Constable Bleikie, who resides nearby and the Fire Brigade duly arrived, but. the fire had such a strong hold that the building was quickly gutted. Miss Scorrar, it 'is stated, is a heavy loser 1 , new furniture 'having arrived yesterday from Auckland. Her personal effects are said to be insured for (£l5O in an Auckland office. r l he building was covered in the State office, but the amount is not available. , It is reported that a sum of between £25 and £3O in notes which were in an attache case was destroyed.
