HOROWHENUA PRIMARY SCHOOLS TOURNEY.

SHANNON ,WIN SEVEN-A-SIDE

RUGBY. OHAU. THEZiASKET BALL CHAMPIONS. Wednesday afternboii pn the Levin Domain the primary schools of the Horowhenua district held a seven-a-side Rugby tournament and a basket ball tourney. There was a large gathering of pupils, parents and supporters, who showed their enthusiasm by the , manner in. which they urged on to victory their .respective teams. In the seven-a-side tourney the Noad Shield, which was held by the Levin school, was at. stake; Ten teams competed, they, being Levin (3), Ohau and Foxtan (2 each), Otaki, Shannon and Levin Convent; The games were all well contested and resulted in the trophy changing hands, Shannon being the winners, their win being very popular.

In the basket ball tourney for the girls, eleven teams of six players took part, they being as follows: Levin (3), Ohau, Foxton and Shannon (2 ,each), Otaki and Levin Convent.. The .games created quite a lot of interest, the Ohau" A team winning the final from Convent after/a close game. At the conclusion of the games Mr R. J. Foss, headmaster of the Levin School, prior to handing over the Noai Shield to Shannon, extended a welcome to Mr Dempsey, who has recently taken over the Otaki School. In ■ presenting the shield to Jack Mason, captain of the Shannon team, Mr Foss said that it had now been competed for on' three occasions: and had been won by Foxton, Levin and and that was how it should be. He was confident that the donor would like to have it go from school to school, also to the smallest school. Shannon's win, he said, was not only a credit to themselves and the school, but to their teacher, who had been, looking after them, and he felt sure it would be the means of inspiring determination to ;do their best and always play up to the best traditions of the code. He then; called for three cheers- for tjho winners whish were heartily given. Mr Morgan, in returning thanks,] said he was very proud of the, school's achievement as it was the first trophy in the football world won by them for many years. ' Mr Fosa then presented to the captain of the Foxton team the Austin banner won by that school in the Horowhenua schools competition; He stated that various schools had w,on the banner and this was Foxton 'a fourth win. Cheers were then given for the winncra. Mr Procter, in returning thanks,i said he thought Ohau had been unlucky not to win it, as when they played Shannon they were only one point behind Foxton and after a "no score" game were awarded a penalty kick, but the ball struck the cross bar and rebounded back. Had it gone over they would have won the Banner. He j)Vas pleased to see Shannon win the... Shield as for the past three years they had had good teams but circumstances had been against them. '.'' . Mr Foss, in calling for three cheers for Ohau A team, winners of the Basket ball tourney, said as no trophy \ had been provided, he hoped the organisers j of the, tourney would.do something to-: wards recognising- the win.
