BATHS AT ROTORUA.

COMPLAINTS OF CONDITIONS. BAD STATE OF BUILDINGS.

Auckland, Jan. 10,

“An inspection of the various baths in Rotorua discloses that the conditions generally are appalling,” writes the Herald’s correspondent. “In the pavilion bath-house are situated some of the most valuable waters to toe found in the district. The famous radium and priest baths there are the only two radium baths now available for use, and both are situated in the ; section used by women. There are four other springs of a similar character that are not in use on account of the buildings being in such a rotten state that they have been nailed up to prevent people from falling through the floor. Radium water is valuable for the treatment of nervous affections and is in great demand. On account of the bath being situated in the women’* * department, men can use it only between 3; and 4 p.m. when it is closed to women. This hour is a most inconvenient one, causing the loss of the whole afternoon. There are at present only two priest baths in use, two others' having been closed on apgftgnt of the dangerous condition of Avork which has fallen in, Sfc* at this bath-house are hi a i*§gh state and *are not at all Jo use, to say the least of titSM. There aref'also ma ny t priA r ato baths not' used because of their condition. “jThe main sAvimming bath, known as me Duchess, is quite inadequate for the!purpose, being now altogether too small. The question of spending pub-lic-money on making the bathing facilities more attractive should be considered in no parochial spirit, but from their value as Dominion assets. Much money is being spent on publicity work to advertise the Dominion, and one of its chief attractions is being avowed to rapidly fall into decay.”
