A GUIDE TO DOMINION AFFAIRS.
As x a concise handbook to tlie ad : ministrative and internal affairs of •New Zealand and its dependencies, the Official Year,Book is in the 'highest class of reference works. .With (the 1929 issue, of which a copy has ibeen forwarded to the Chronicle office, it'reaches its 27th volume, which contains 1045 pages, or 72 more than the 1928 edition. The tendency of isuch publications is to increase in size. In 1922 the Year Book evolved .into royal octavo form, and its greatest bulk was attained in 1927, when it.ran to' 105*6 pages, but the following year saw a slight reduction owing |to the condensation of ;a quantity of letterpress and statistical matter, that 'Jiad appeared in previous issues, 'though a good deal of new information was inserted. In the current volume, while no fresh sections have been added, considerable additions 'have been rniade to existing sections and a special article has been included containing the results of a investigation by a special method into tke "of live-stock production, the .subject matter being well illustrated iby diagrams. Among the new contributions to existing sections the following are of special interest:-—The results of a coilection of statistics of motor transport, which are given in the section 011 roads and road transport; articles in the section on factory production, in •Which industries'are dissected according to their organisation and nature land the salient features compared; isummariscd figures of accounts relating to land settlement and trading unidcrtakings, in the section on public finance, and information on main highways taxation in the same section; and an' article on the monthly course of employment, which appears in the section on employment and unemployment.
The article on climate has been entirely re-written by Dr. Kidson, and the sub-section on agricultural production has also been re-wrirte».* One section is devoted to 1 a statistical summary covering the last 50 years. The general election of 1928 is dealt with to the extent of giving a list of the successful candidates, with" their 1 seats; and the members of the new .Ministry, with thoir portfolios, are-al-so enumerated.
By the business or professional man the'Year. Book should be regarded as a necessity, while the general reader will find it a great aid to an'understanding of his country's organisation and resources, and therefore a valuable addition to his library.
