FIRE IN A BAKEHOUSE.

BUILDING GUTTED AND PLANT DESTROYED. Fire broke out in one of the bakehouses of the Magnet Bakery, Oxford Street Levin, early on Monday, with the result that the building was gutted and the contents destroyed, causing loss and inconvenience to the proprietor, Mr A. Y. Hornig, who, however, is maintaining the output by using the other oven to its full working capacity. Three employees had commerced work and a fire had been startid in the furnace alongside the oven of tlie detached bakehouse. The men then went to the other bakery, which is in the main building, to put tho dough out. On returning to the outside bakehouse, about 20 minutes past three, they found it in flames. It is assumed that an ember had fallen from the furnace ’and ignited some woodfuel lying in front- of it. The alarm wa3 given, and, pending the arrival of the brigade, which was quickly on the scene, the staff. made use of a- small hose on the premises. The fire, however, had a strong hold, and it was only by hard work on the part of the brigade, using Water from the main, that it was prevented from spreading into the bulk storej separated by a covered passage-way. Two troughs oi dough, sufficient for 600 loaves, were spoilt, the top of the oven was damaged, and the' bakehouse plant ruined. Fortunately tin valuable machinery of the automatic mixing system was in the other bakehouse. The store-room contained about four tons of flour, most of which was saved, a few bags being spoilt by water. Various commodities used in the making of small goods naturally suffered from .water and smoko. The plant was insured for £l5O in the Norwich Union, but there was no policy on the bakehouse, which is owned by Mr P. Bevis, a former proprietor of the business, who now resides in the Old Country/'
