OUTBREAK AT SHANNON.
GOOD SAVE MADE. An outbreak of fire occurred in a house in Grey Street, Shannon, owned and occupied by Mrs Coaldey, in the early hours of Sunday morning. . The alarm was sounded at 2 a.m. and on arrival at the scene, the Brigade found the ceiling over the kitchen to be on fire. In the meantime, a neighbour, Mr Lankshear, had kept the outbreak in cheek by pouring a liberal quantity of water on the part affected. * The Brigade were unable to use the hose owing to there being no fire plug handy. A bucket brigade was formed and after the removal of some iron from the joof, the fire was soon quenched. The Avails of the kitchen Avere burned, damage being done to thcw'contents of this room and an adjoining room by AVater. Fortunately there was no Avipcl; otherwise the house, which was an old one and built of totara, Avould have been quickly demolished. Both tire building and the contents are covered by insurance.
OTHER OUTBREAKS OCCUR. The firebell rang out an alarm at 10.30 on Sunday night for a further outbreak in the same premises. A resident passing the house noticed smoke issuing from the building. The occupiers being away, he called Superintendent Curran, who on investigation found a fire in the bedroom adjoining the room in which the first outbreak occurred. A bed in the robm was on fire and the flames were going up the wall. With the aid of a few buckets of water the fire was soon extinguished. When the Brigade were about to leave it was reported that smoke was issuing from the roof of a room at the other end of the house. Superintendent. Curran on opening the door leading into the room was confronted by a cloud of smoke. On the smoke clearing it was found that a three-quarter bed was ablaze, Avith the flames reaching to the ceiling. Once again the bucket brigade and fire extinguishers were brought into action and the blaze Avas quickly got under control.
In the morning after the first outbreak. a thorough inspection was made of th e house, Avhcn there Avas no sign of fire, so the cause of the latter outbreaks are difficult to arrive at.
