A "shop clay" will be hold on Saturday, 3rd November, under the auspices" of the Methodist Church Ladies Guild, when a fine selection of childicn'.s clothing, produce, home made cakes, etc., will be offered.
A rink consisting of Messrs White, Blackwood, Jones and Morgan (skip) represented the Shannon Bowling Club at the opening of the Levin green on Saturday, and in their game secured a victory by 39 points to 16.
The secretary of the Shannon Chamber of Commerce, has received an in, vitation from the Foxton Chamber ot Commerce for representatives of the local Chamber and the Mayor or Deputy Mavor to attend that Chambers Ladies social evening to be held on October 12th.
On Sunday morning Mr J. S. Wilkinson was taken suddenly ill, necessitating calling Dr. Thompson from Levin. \fter receiving medical attention Mr Wilkinson showed an improvement, but he is still very ill. All will join us in wishing him a speedy recovery to good health. ,
Lovers of dancing will be delighted to learn that a "Joy Night" dance is to be held in the/ Parish Hall next Fridav. A good time is guaranteed for old and voiuig alike. The music, will be bv members of the Foxton orchestra, "and the ladies of Veil Bode have the supper arrangements m hand. Various competitions will be held during the evening.
On Friday afternoon a number of members of'the Shannon Croquet Club gathered at the Pavilion to bid farewell to their late secretary, Mrs J. S. Spencer, who has taken up her residence at Levin. Afternoon tea was served when the president, Mrs (■. C. Franks, on behalf of the members, presented Mrs Spencer with a handsome brush and comb as a token of their appreciation of her services to the club. Mrs Franks, in eulogising the «rood work done by the departing guest, expressed the regret of all at her departure assuring her she would carrv with her the best wishes of all for 'her future happiness and prosperity-.
The benefit football match in aid of G. Westwood (a Foxton player), who was injured in the Manawhenua-Wel-lington' game at Levin, to have been played at Shannon on Saturday between Shannon and Foxton seniors, did not eventuate, owing to the Foxton team failing to put in an appearance. Disappointment was expressed at .their non-appearance and also to the. fact that they failed to-notify the Shannon team of its inability to send a team. As Westwood is a member of the Foxton team and the' game had been suggested from that end, the public naturally expected Foxton to take the field.
A particularly bright and cheerful party was given by Mrs 0. M. Cronquest at her home in Stout Street on Friday last, the occasion being a "Birthday surprise" to Mr Cronquest, who so successfully took the part of "Barry" in "A Country Girl" recently staged in Levin. About thirty guests assembled, including many from Levin. The evening was spent in music, dancing and competitions. A very dainty supper was served, the table decorations being primroses and anemones, while the colour scheme of the room carried out. in scarlet and black struck a vivid note that was most effective. With the multi-coloured caps worn by the guests, their mascots and other novelties 'provided by the hostess, the scene was a gay one. The birthday toast to Mr C. M. Cronquest was ably given by Mr Jones, who traced the various stages one goes through from the first birthday to old age, saying each one left a memory that was hard to erase. The guest of. the cveuing, he -said, Avas passing through the singing and amusing stage; that was why those present representing music and art had rolled up on his birthday. Mr Cronquest, replying to the toast thanked all present for their kind greetings and the pleasant evening, particularly his wife, who certainly had given him a surprise and one he would never forget. Regarding singing and amusing, if they and the audiences had enjoyed themselves as much as he had in playing, he was satisfied, but he found that the old age part was looming mi and he would soon be placed among the "has beens." Mr D. Todd spoke on behalf of the performers in Levin. The toast of the ladies was proposed by Mr Denton, being ably responded to 'by Mr Varnham. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" lirouglit a very happy function to a close.
