FARM MOTOR LORRIES.

EXEMPTION FROM' HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES ADVOCATED.

A recommendation was presented by the Works Committee to the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday that the Counties in the Dominion -be circularised, or the County Conference executive .be requested, to supporflegislation for the exemption of motor ioi> ries owned by bona fide farmers from payment of heavy traffic license -fees when such vehicles are used by the owner for farming purposes only.

The chairman said that this matter had been before the executive, but he did not think there was any reason , why it should not be brought up'again, li would be realised that there were dangers attached to the proposal, but if? was for the Comities' Association to ■ take the whole aspect of it into con- ; sidoration. He suggested that the. reference to circularising the counties of the Dominion be deleted. The execu, . tive would consider it and, if necessary, send it on to the Counties Conference, or make representations accordingly. ' Cr. Jensen said he was somewhat doubtful as to the attitude which the Counties Association would take towards the proposal. There waß no -do- ,-, übt that the local bodies looked to the motor lorries for a certain amount of revenue, but he thought they over-look-ed the question whether that revenue was earned fairly or-not. People-who had already contributed to the upkeep of the roads should not be charged again by. way of heavy traffic license. ; The recommendation was amended by the deletion of the reference to circularising the eounties, and in that form was adopted.
