AUSTRALIAN SERVICES
Probably no country in the world is better served by. radio than Australia. This is due in some degrees to the fact that the huge island continent finds it necessary to keep in direct communication with shipping on the seven seas, but more particularly with buips? in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Altogether there are 18 wireless stations round the Australian coast, and all of them are in either direct or indirect communication with the principal receiving station of Amalgamated Wireless, Ltd., at La Perouse. In addition to the station at Sydney, receiving and transmitting stations operate at the following strategic points round the coast; Adelaide, Brisbane, Broome, Cooktown, Darwin, Eseeranee, Flinders -Island, Geraldton, Hobarty King, Island, Melbourne, Perth Roekhampton,: Sydney, Thursday/Island Townsville, Willis Islan'd, and Wyudham. . , These stations are so organised and situated that at any time in the day or the night a message can be transmitted'by them Ho any vessel within 500 miles' range of the Australian eoa&t. Their night range is up to 8,000 miles. With special-short wave apparatus, the-stations at Sydney, Melbourne,- and Perth can keep in communication with ships equipped with similar transmitting and receiving sets at all stages between Australia ami the Pacific coast of North America, and Tilbury Docks, London. Since i 022 these wireless stations have been oper ated under an agreement with tho Federal Government by Amalgamated Wireless Ltd. Stringent conditions are imposed, so that the reception by the leading stations on the Australian coast shall be equal to those in use m many other parts of the world. As a matter of fact - during the past two years Australia has steadily maintained the lead in long-distance short-wave radio transmissions. . ;
