WIRELESS AS CURE

NEW TREATMENHFOR

Electrical'science once -again promis es to lend its aid to the-world of medi cine.

Two American scientists are testing tho 'value of short wave-length wireloss broadcasting apparatus as a cure for * general paralysis. The bacilli ot thisi disease cannot live when the blood is at a high temperature, anxl previous treatments} notably by Dr. Wagner von Jauregg, of Vienna, have been made by injecting malaria germs into thc ; blood of the patient, the intention being to kill the bacilli of the particu lar form of paralysis. This treatment, however, is very difficult to control. With the new treatment -the blood temperature can be raised and properly controlled at the same time. Accidental Discovery.

The discovery • came accidentally. It was noticed that men working in the General Electric Company's works became faint and ill when they were operating six-metre wireless sets. The heating effect of the waves was tested with a solution, and the discov- 1 cry-made that a six-metre wave-length apparatus gave suitable results. It is believed that a high temperature can be produced locally upon tho skin with this new apparatus. Scientists are careful in 1 their statements regarding the, medical value of this treatment, but the Rockfeller Institute is now experimenting with it
