WINDING ON A NEW TIMING CHAIN

In some layouts of distribution gear access to the timing chain is often not very conveniently arranged; when it is desired to renew the chain matters are simplified considerably in cases w'here the cover is in close proximity to one of the sprockets. First of all turn the engine until the joint pin in the chain is in a convenient position for removal; take it*out and couple up one end of the new chain with one end of the old. Turn the engine slowly and feed on the new chain winding off the old one at the same time until the joint of the new and old come on top, when the pin can be removed and replaced through both ends of the new chain.
