RUGBY FOOTBALL.

HOROWHENUA DISTRICT REPORT

The annual report of the lloiNawhenua Rugby District Council, to be presented at the annual meeting on March 27th, is as under:—r Your Committee met regularly throughout the season and all members have attended excellently. The season opened on April 23rd and subsequent events proved the wisdom of starting the competitions early. Championship winners in the different grades are as follows: —Senior Championship.—Hui Mai (Levin Club Cup). Nbsh Cup. —Shannon (Nash Cup). Junior Championship.—Miranui (Clip, Canoe and Banner). Licensed Victuallers’ Cup.—Wcraroa (Cup). Runner-up Junior Championship.—Weraroa (Cup). Third-grade Championship.—Paraparaumu (Cup). Fourth-grade Championship.—Levin District High School (Procter Cup). Primary Schools.— Foxton (Austiu Banner). Primary Schools Sevcn-a-Side. —Foxton (Noad Shield). Dewar’s Imperial Trophy.— Pakehas. \ Junior Grades.—Your Committee has carried on the policy of the previous year of fostering football in the schools and in the lower grades. In this connection valuable aid was given by Mr W. Noad, who i resented a handsome shield for a primary schools seven-a-side tournament. To encourage) entries for this shield, your-committee defrayed the cost of travelling for all teams'travelling' to Levin. The third-grade representatives journeyed to. Marton, where they met and defeated Rangitikei by 14 to 3. The juniors played two representative games, winning the game against Manawatu and losing to Wanganui. It is hoped that the game with Wanganui will be an annual one. Senior Representative Games. —Bebbington Shield. —The Senior Representatives succeeded in holding the Bebbington Shield. The result of games was as follows: —Horowhenua v. Dannevirke, won by 38 to 13; Horowhenua v. Bush, won 20 to 14; Horowhenua v. Oroua, won 47 to, 21.

In the home and home games with Manawatu each .side claimed one victory..

Finance. —Your Committee were enabled to show a credit balance on the year’s working and the balance sheet will show that £6O has been added to amount on fixed deposit at Bank of Australasia. This result must be considered very creditable. The second round of senior fixtures ‘was robbed of interest. '

Insurance.—lt is pleasing to record that a greater number of players insured under the .Council’s' scheme. As a result mpre claims had to be met, but nevertheless £9 was added to the amount already in the Post Office Savings Bank, making the balance there nearly £6O. Your Committee regrets that a serious accident befell our worthy skipper, Mr H. Jacob, but a good recovery was made by him and we should have his assistance in an advisory capaciiy for many more years. Obituary. —It was with the deepest sorrow that footballers learned, during the season, of the passing of one of the stalwarts of football in Horowhenua, and in Shannon in particular, in the person of Mr Rewi Moynihan. Your Committee extended its sincere sympathy to the relatives of the deceased footballer. # - Thanks.—Your Committee’ desires to thank the Press of the District for very loyal support given throughout the season, and all supporters and well-wish-ers of Rugby football in Horowhenua. BALANCE SHEET. The general account shows that the year commenced with a credit balance of £94 4s lid, and the subsequent receipts amounted to £579 6s 9d, the principal items being gates £5lO Is 4d, affiliation £29 18s 6d,.and N.Z.R.U. school grant £ls. The year ended with a credit balance of £153 17s, the bulk of which is on'fixed deposit. The expenditure totalled £520 10s Id, and included the following items:—Reps. ’ travelling—taxi hire £l2O 6s, grounds and gatekeepers £76 11s 6d, advertising £75 3s 3d, entertaining reps and supper £3B 3s Id, assistance to school football £34 7 S 7d. The insurance account had a credit of £SO 9s 6d at the beginning of the year, and a credit of £59 18s 4d at the close. The receipts were £59 3s Id, which included club insurance £34 2s 6d and players’ premiums £2l 7s 6d. The expenditure amounted to £49 14s 6d, of which £45 6s was paid for compensation. ‘‘

The liabilities are nil. The assets are £432 19s lid, made up of the above balances, to which are added jerseys, footballs and hose valued at £ls, trophies £2OO, and bags, bell, stationery, etc., £5.
