VIGILANCE OF AUTOMOBILE CLUB.

DEMANDS FROM ROAD USERS EXPECTED NOW. “I am directed to call your attention to the very unsatisfactory state of the Main Road and the bridges thereon (more particularly the Kara and Manakau bridges), running through your eountv,” wrote Mr W. McKenzie, secretary of the Palmerston branch of the Wellington Automobile Club, in a , letter read at the Horowhcnua County Council meeting on Saturday. “We are given to understand that some of the planks on the Kara bridge jump right out of their places when motor vehicles pass over the bridge. M e thank you in anticipation in the hope that prompt attention will be given to these serious matters.” The chairman remarked that all motorists now were naturally going to demand that they have decent loads, and he expected them to. A reply might be sent to Mr McKenzie that the Council was calling tenders for the erection of the new Kara bridge immediately. The Council might also call attention to the speed at which, motoi vehicles passed over bridges. C'r. Barber: Forty-five miles an hour is not a fair speed‘to cross a bridge. Cr. Catley mentioned the Kuku bridge; and the chairman said he would discuss this with the engineer’s report. • It was decided to reply to Mr McKenzie in the terms outlined by the chairman. “The condition of our roads, is not bad,” the chairman added. “We have these bridges which we know have to be renewed, but our roads generally are very good. There is only one way to make them better, and that is to reconstruct and seal them.” He stated that the other bridge referred to by Mr McKenzie was the Waikawa bridge. At a subsequent stage of the. meeting a resolution was massed authorising the calling of tenders for the new Kara bridge. f
