MAORILAND THEATRE.

“THE BLACKBIRD’’ ON~SATURDAY

The scene of Saturday's pictures is laid in London’s underworld of Limehouse, and here a dramatic story is enacted centreing round the rivalry of two men for hand of Fifi. Lon Chaney has a part that suits him admirably in a dual, role which gives him full scope to display his genius at makeup. He is strongly supported by Owen Moore and Rene Adoree.

“HELD BY THE LAW.’’ *

Following is an outline of the story of “Held By the Law,’’ Monday’s picture: Tragedy replaces gaiety at the engagement party of Mary Travis and Tom Sinclair when Boris Morton, gen-tleman-black sheep, facing exposure for the theft of a necklace, shoots Sinclair’s father in the back while the two fathers are drinking a toast in the library. Morton, with the cunning of desperation, easts the gun from liis gloved hand into the room and joins the horrified guests as one of them. Tom Sinclair, stunned by the tragedy, unconsciously casts suspicion on Mary’s father. Morton’s gun and , Tom’s strange attitude serve to convict Travis of murder, sentenced to die. The only evidence connecting Morton with the murder is the glove bearing the imprint of the gun handle, which the murderer had hidden in a vase. Although Mary has broken the engagement, she turns to Tom in the last moments to save her father, and slender clues are-followed as tiny bits of evidence point to Morton as the murderer. The real slayer is incriminated at thii last moment by his attempts to rescue the glove and thus destroy the last bit of gulit. Mary’s father is saved from the electric chair, and Marv and Tom are reunited.
