WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.
The December meeting of the Shan- { non Women's Institute was held on Wednesday aftorno.on, when there was again a splendid attendance of members. During.the business part of the meeting it was decided to hold a stall j some time in January, and an effort is ■ to be made to provide bigger prizes for.: the card parties next year. In .the unavoidable absence of Mr Hornblow, of Foxton, who was to have given a talk on Travel, the afternoon was devoted to. competitions, a humorous reading, and' a rose show, while a monologue by Joyce Merwood and a pianoforte solo by Joan Bovis, were much enjoyed. Despite the heavy rain of the morning there was a splendid assortment or : roses on show, and much pleasure was given thereby. ' At the next meeting on January 18th, there will be a buttonhole competition, when members will be given material, needle and thread,' and asked to make two medium-sized buttonholes. This should prove both interesting and instructive. Miss Jerome Spencer, the Dominion Organiser for the Women's Institutes, is expected to pay a visit to £he Shannon branch early in the New lear..
