SPORTING NOTES

APPRENTICE THE PREMIER HORSEMAN. The contest for the riding honours of the Dominion for the 1926-7 season in which the Awapuni apprentice, T. W. Green, and the Auckland horseman, R. McTavish, were the central figures, was brought to a close on Saturday when the former lad emerged with an advantage of two and a half points over his nearest opponent. By that success Green has attained the honour of 'having created a new' record thereby, apart from the fact that it is ,he first time in the history of the Dominion that an .apprentice has headed both lists, he has attained that position n his second year of filling a saddle. At one stage Green had established a commanding lead, but then came a bombshell when lie was stood down i for a month, which w T as followed by a period of incapacity brought about ,>y his suffering a broken collar-bone ,chen Askari fell with him when following the hounds with the Manawatu Hunt. Added to the fact that Green vas across the Tasman for a furthei period in the spring, it can safely to said that he lost in all about five nonths of the season which makes liis .ecord all the more remarkable. While t was evident that the new champion ider possessed the ability of a liracised rider practically from the time of sis entering upon his career, no little ■redit for the success must be awardd the mentor to whom Green is at-

aehed, for R. E. Hatch, who was him;clf one of the Dominion’s foremost torsemen in the hey day of his riding ;areer, has expended no small amount f time in coaching Green along the fight lines. There is at the present heltering under the charge of Hatch mother budding horseman, who also ihows a fund of promise and more may well be heard of him either this or next

season and it will be indeed surprising if Awapuni does not furnish anJtber champion at no great distant date.
