SHANNON UNEMPLOYED.
OVER TWENTY** MARKED MEN OUT OF WORK.
At the special meeting of the Boio UK h Council on Tuesday evening, Mr Williamson, representing over twenty local unemployed married men, waited on the Council, to ask if that body could give any relief by finding work for some of the men, also if they would impress upon those responsible for tne construction of the new road approach to. the bridge, the urgency of commencing this work. He said that some or the men had been out of employment for the past five or six weeks, and were now in very poor circumstances. He said he realised that the Council had no money, but he thought, perhaps something similar to what had been done in Feilding, where the Government had subsidised the Council £1 for xl, could be put into effect in Shannon. The Mayor, in reply, stated that the Council had no way of giving employment to any extent. He said they had waited on the Main Highways engineers last week in reference to the new road and they had said the work would-be gone on with immediately the site had been definitely decided upon. He,pointed out that the Council had nothing to do with the road, it being under the control of the Horowhenua County Council. ~ Cr. Curran, junr., asked, if it would be possible to give a week’s work to some of these men at the cemetery. He said there was a.sum of £3O on the estimates to be spent on the cemetery. Cr. Richardson, chairman of the Cemetery Committee, said this money was set aside for the year to do such work as cutting the grass, carting metal, etc. Cr. Curran, junr., then moved that the Minister of Public Works be written to pointing out the urgency of , commencing the constructing of the, new road, also drawing his attention to the number of married men out of work locally. The motion was carried. Or Hyde said he thought the present was a good time to,have the road to tjie cemetery formed, m The Roads Committee had £IOO and they should try and get a Government subsidy. This was a matter the Council had got to face, he said, and it would help them and at the same time give relief to unemployed. He went on to say that the different committees were meeting immediately and if they had any money to spend profitably and wisely, now was the time to spend it. Cr Curran, junr., contended that it the Roads Committee had money to spend ori the formation of footpaths, this work could now be donel Finally, on the suggestion of the Mayor, it was decided that each committee meet andssee if each can find a few days work for some of the men.
