RUGBY REFEREES.

DISTRICT COUNCIL AGAIN TAKES CONTROL. APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE SET UP. The Horowhenua Rugby District Council has aarain severed its relations with the Referees Association of tins district. This decision was arrived at last evening, at the weekly meeting of the management committee ot the former body when the management of affairs by the Association was criticised, ana a resolution was passed placing the control of referees in.the hands of the Council, which vyill make the necessary appointments through a committee of three of its members. The subject was brought up by Mr Joyce, who asked what the Council was going to do in jegard to the refereeing. At the match on the Levin Domain on Saturday last, he said, a number of the spectators were leaving the ground before the game was finished because they were not satisfied with the refereeing. The best referees were not getting tbe best games, and it seemed that the Association was experimenting with the referees. This was not fair either to the players or to the public. _ Mr Robeson said that the Council had given the Association a chance to prove that they were sincere in their offers to control the refereeing, but they had t not taken that opportunity. It was time that the Council took a firm stand arid did something “off its own bat. Mr Anderson asked where the referees’ delegate was,.and why he did not come to the meeting. The chairman said he had intended to move that the Association delegate’s seat on the Council be declared vacant. He added that the Council had humbled itself to meet the referees’ representatives a fortnight ago, and had shown its anxiety to help them. He then understood that the Association was going to be put on a good footing; but appareritly nothing had been done at all. The Association was pushing all the work on to the secretary of the Council, and iri the meantime it was sitting backMr Ryder said he thought that the chairman should interview the delegates from the Association and see what they were going to do. * - The chairman replied that the Association’s delegate had failed to attend the Council’s meetings for a month, with the exception of his attendance with the deputation a . fortnight ago. Mr Casev said he did not know that the referee at last Saturday’s local match had deteriorated so much; he was a man who had spent a lot of time and money in the interests, of football. The chairman emphasised that good ■or bad refereeing was only one phase of the discussion. The referees weie in a bad way, but they had got themselves into it. < Mr Anderson: I think we had better cut adrift from them again. Mr Wrigley moved, that owing to the unsatisfactory position in which the Council has been placed by the Referee's ’ Association,. the control of the referees be taken over by the Council. He said he did not think that . the Council would have any trouble in securing referees. Mr Anderson seconded the motion. Mr Robson said that there was a surplus of referees in Palmerston, and he thought it would pay the Council to engage them. Mr Ryder then moved and Mr Joyce seconded, That, all passes issued to referees not wilbng to act under this Council be called in. The motion was carried.

On the motion of Mr Procter, seconded by Mr Anderson, it was decided that the seat of the referees’ delegate on the Council be declared vacant. An appointments committee was set up consisting of Messrs J. J. O’Connor, J. W. Procter, and J. Casey.

NOTES ON SHANNON PLAYERS. After the fine display given by the Sharinon seniors against County, spectators who witriessed them in action against Otaki on Saturday were disappointed, despite the big score of 26 to 3. Pferhaps, meeting a weak team had something to do with their i play, as it has often been noticed in the past, that they put up a better exhibition against a strong team than a weak one.

One outstanding fault on Saturday was that some of the players were inclined to go too much on their own. This is bad, as it is team work that wins a game. It is pleasing to notice, in this respect, that Roberts, the captain,, is setting a good example by not playing solo. The Shannon forwards are a young lot and are endowed with a fair amount of pace, and as a team work well together. They do not all shine out, but it is necessary to have solid grafting men for the tight work, and in Hurst, E. Satherley, K. Dalzell and Robbie, this role is well filled. The other members show up well in the loose. So far this season the team’s scrum work has not been all that is desired the ball seldom coming out cleanly to the half. Wall, at half, is improving with each game. Lenihan commenced badly on Saturday,'' but improved a lot as the spell went on. In the second half he was playing well up to his reputation. P. Satherley, on the wing, was very impressive. He runs straight and is a good scoring man, but has a bad fault in “hurdling,” which he should drop. Roberts has proved himself to be good at both attack and defence, and can always be relied on to do his share of the work. Hunt (centre) is the sheet anchor of the back division and if it is possible, can always be relied on to get his team Q ut of trouble. He is strong in every department of the game and should be a certainty for rep. honours this season. On Saturday he scored a try and kicked four goals. Robbie, on the other wing, tackles well, but is uncertain in taking a pass. In each game this player , is showing marked improvement in this respect, and with a little more practice he shoould be well up to the required standard. „ Syinonds, who was tried as fiveeighths, in which position he was a

failure, seems to have found his right place as full-back. He is a good man in this position. . .. The sole selector, Mr Wimata, witnessed the game on Saturday. It is a pity he was not present at the ShannonCounty game, as no doubt the chances of several Shannon players would have been improved for representative hon- , Shannon has always been noted Lot the supporters who follow the Club s fortunes, red ribbons being much m evidence at all their matches. On Saturdav they had acquired a new supporter —a member of the canine tribe being present with the Club’s colours prominently displayed.
