Pheasants are almost a rarity about New Plymouth these days, says the Taranaki Herald, but fifty years ago they were plentiful enough and ed good sport. In the Herald of May 18, 1887, it is recorded fhat on the previous day Captain Wheeler, of the s.s. Hawea, spent a few hours ashore while, his steamer was discharging and loaning and shot no fewer than 12 brace. The same dsy Messrs Cottier, Paul and Groombridge obtained 29 brace in the Omata district. In the same paper there is an extract from the Auckland Star referring to 50 dozen pheasants from New Plymouth being landed at Manukau by tha s.s. Wellington.
