ACCIDENTS NEAR OTAKI.

A DRIVER ARRESTED. NASTY SMASH ON TE MANAWA HILL. On Saturday evening, about 6 o’clock, Mr and Mrs J. Cooksley and their daughter, accompanied by the liev. and Mrs I-lenuiera Tokoaitua, were returning to Ctaki in a car from a funeral at Manakau, and when they were partly dowii the Te Manawa hill Mr Cooksley noticed a ear ahea,d and pulled to the side of the road. The oiicoming ear, however, which was a Studcbakcr, struck Mr Cooksley’s car with considerable force, smashing the two front wheels and under-carriage and doing other damage. ' The occupants of Mr Cooksley’s car wqve all thrown out on to the road and badly shaken. Mrs Taipua was severely bruised and had to receive medical aid.

The driver of the Studebalcer, which was considerably damaged, was Lynn MeKelvie. He was taken in charge by the police, a,nd later was released on bail. This morning lie was charged, before Mr ll‘. Nicholson, J.P., with having been in charge of a ear while he was in a state of intoxication. A remand was asked for by the police and was granted, and the case will be heard before the Magistrate on Wednesday. COLLISION BETWEEN CAR AND LORRY. While Mr Arthur Thompson was driving over the Otaki Bridge yesterday morning, a collision took place between his lorry and a large sedan- .driven by Mr. Goldingluyn, of Palmerston North. The force of the impact considerably damaged the latter vehicle, and Mr Thompson received a cut about the eye and injuries to the chest and knee. He was conveyed to the Otaki hospital for treatment. Mr Goldingham’s car was also badly damaged, and the rails of the bridge were broken.
