BOWLS AND CROQUET.
SHANNON BOiWLING SEASON OPENS. Wednesday was the opening day of the Shannon Bowling Club’s season. There were at least fifty visiting bowlers present—four rinks from Levin, one each from the Terrace End, Northern and Takar© Clubs, one from Manakau and two from Palmerston North, as well as a rink from Foxton —who, with their wives and friends, made a strong contribution to an aggregate of 140 people. Mr J. T. Bovis, in the stead of Mr A. T. White, club president, first of all declared the croquet lawn open. Hie was glad to see So many players from other towns and clubs, as the spirit of inter-cluib play was, indeed, worth while, and lie hoped that the appearance of so many visitors was hut a. foretaste of the future. The trophy presented by iMrs F. Brown for the champion singles player had been annexed by Mrs A. Mason, who deserved every congratulation at her success. -(Applause). He expressed the sincere gratitude of the Bowling Club for the ladies having furnished afternoon teas during the past season. Finally, he conveyed his best wishes for another season -of continued prosperity. He then called upon Mrs J. Aim to make tire first stroke. The party then made its way to the howling green, to which visiting howlers were accorded a hearty welcome. Mr Bovis said it was the president’s Avish that mare frequent visits this season should be paid to sister clubs, thereby creating a greater (social activity (in -tihe- bowling world. The Shannon Bowling Club was still shaving in the general prosperity of the game and they could look forward to another good season. He extended the club’s welcome to the new members who would, no doubt, assist in maintaining the club’s high standing and see to its well being. . • Mrs A. T. White threw up the jack and tile first 'bowl and in a, few minutes everyone, bowlers .and spectators, were absorbed in the games. The croquet competitions, concluded with the following results:— French croquet: Mrs Owen (Foxton) 16. Target croquet: Mrs Capes (Lower Huti), 52. , Golf croquet: Mrs Walker (Levin) 4, Mrs Blackwood 3. Clock croquet: Mrs Shennan (Levin) 5. „ The cards handed in by skips ot the various rinks showed the undermentioned scores:— Levin (1): Pink, Sherwood, Pyke and HaAvke (s), 11. ; Shannon (1): Blackwood, Hudson. Watterston and Roach (s) 13. Levin (2): Shennan, Parker, Bockett and Biull (s), 27. . Shannon (2): Aim, Gordon, Bovis and Knowles (s) 18. Shannon (3): Franks, Boyle, Shannon and Spencer (s) 35. Terrace End: Rendell, Collier, Duncalf and Snell (s) 2. . r , Levin (3): Clements, Rioutley, Monies and Derh am (s) 22. . „ Palmerston North (1): Smith, Boon, Rudkin and Collins (s) 15. Levin (4): Cameron, Gibson, 1 ercy and Sulian (s), 24. . Shannon (4): Hensinan, Blackie, Whibley and Murray (s), 16. Palmerston North (2): Bayliss, Frew Stevenson and Pickering 31. Takaro (1): Stone, Clark, Mortland, and Gallichan (s), 9. Northern (1): Levy, Barker, Rumble, and Cunningham (s), 27. Foxton (1): Walton, Downes, Walk er and Woods (s) 9. Thompson’s (Foxton), rink 'beat Radford’s (Manawatu) by 22 to- 21. At the Close of the afternoon •Mr White said it had been a pleasure to entertain and play Avith, so many visitors and he reaffirmed Avhat Mr Bovis said, earlier in the afternoon, in relation to clubs -visiting each other and of the reception outside clubs were assured if they came to Shannon.
Mr Denham, president of the Levin Club, responded on behalf of visiting clubs'and said they had'Avell kept in view what had been said regarding their plaving on each others’ green. The hospitality of the ladles had been much appreciated, and bowlers were cognisant of the many services willingly rendered by members of the fair sex" (Hear,’ hear). He called for three cheers for the Shannon Bowling Club and its lady supporters, and found hearty response there"fcO* The Shannon Bowling Club will be represented by rinks at the opening of the season of the folloAving clubs on Saturday, October 2nd:—Palmerston North, Northern and ptaki.
