ROADMAN’S REPORT. The roadman (Mr F. Haley) reported as follows:—During the month 92 yards of metal have been carted on to Nathan Terrace, Sheehan, and Margaret Streets. Have had grader over Margaret, Ballance and Grey streets and East road. TAR; SPRAYER. Tile matter of purchasing a hand tar sprayer was left to the Road Committee to d&il with. RESIGNATIONS RECEIVED (FROM COUNCILLORS. Crs. Roberts and Watkins tendered their resignations as members of the Council. The former is now esiding at. Mangaore and the latter left on Wednesday for Mauriceville, where he will reside. At the previous , meeting of the Council Cr. Hook, who will probably be absent from Shannon for some time, asked for three months’ leave of absence. As there was a likelihood at the time, of the above resignations being received, the .re-. quest was held over until the Council meeting on October 12th. it was pointed out that now an election is unavoidable, Cr. Hook may. tender ■his hut should he fall to attend the next meeting his seat will be forfeited, he having missed three consecutive meetings. The Town Clerk was instructed to communicate with Cr. Hiook and point out tile position which has arisen. Under these circumstances Gis. Roberts and Watkiiis are to bo asked to bold over jtheir resignations until that date, so that if Cr. Hook decides to withdraw as a member of the Council, the one election can theii lie held to fill the three seats. The. Mayor and Councillors expressed their regret at the departure from tiro town of both councillors and to Cr. Watkins;- who was present,, they wished lie and his family every success and happiness in their new" home. THE LIBRARY. Cr. Thwaites reported that the order had gone forward for a number of new books for the Library. He stated that the Librarian had carefully gone through the request book from which, the list had been compiled. The order had been placed with Mr J. V. Biurns. ROAD COMMITTEE’S REPORT. Cr. Spencer reported that he and Cr. Richardson had inspected tihe bridge over Stansell’s drain,, which gives approach to Mr B„ Wilkinson’s property. It is now completed and is quite satisfactory. They had also inspected the creek at this point and found Ihat the water washing .in under the bank is caused by the concrete slabs in the creek diverting the water. These (should he removed. They also recommended that the trees on the west hank should be cut do wm as they were liable with a strong wind to fall and block the creek," thus causiiig a lot of trouble. The fcerbing of footpath in S,tout Street, was in course of construction. It had been decided after careful consideration to bring this footpath in from a width of 12ft to Bft wide near the last house. The path to this point is already formed to-a width of 12 feet. The renovating of the municipal building is going on satisfactorily, and he had found the timber in a better state of preservation than he had expected. • The Mayor referring to decreasing the width of footpath in Stout Street contended that the path would look odd with a short narrow strip. He did not approve of it. Cr. Spencer pointed out tiiat to make the footpath 12 foot the full length, was going to make a lot of work in the way of extra filling and forming. Cr. Thwaites expressed the opinion that around the main streets the footpaths should be kept as .near a straight line as possible. To make tile alteration to 8 feet that means the Council’s previous motion will have to be rescinded. Or. Curran: “The motion provides for the footpaths being 8 feet wide.” Some of the councillors being of opinion that the width was 12 feet, the Town Clerk cleared the matter up iby reading the minute winch clearly stated 8 feet. Cr Richardson said the trouble was’ that the portion formed some years ago was 12 feet. Finally, on the motion of Cr. Downes it was decided that the portion above the cottages, he 8 feet wide and that the work be gone on with.
