Archdeacon Johnson, of Wellingon, was a visitor' o Shannon yesterday.
The evening service on Sunday next at the Methodist Church will be taken by Rev: Witheford, of Paraparaumu.
A pay-out of Is s|d per lb for buterfat supplied during the month of August, will be made by the Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co. to their suppliers.
'l'be annual meeting of the Shannon Tennis Club (inc.) will be held in the Council Chambers On Wednesday, September 22nd, at 7.30 p.m. All members an Intending members are requested to attend.
The prize-winners at -tire card tourney held last evening by the 'Gribbage Club are as follows:—Crib: Ladies, Mrs Butler; gents, Mr G. Hjansmann; euchre, Mrs MoLachlin.
Readers are reminded of the dance to be held by the Shannon Choral Society in the Parish Hall this evening at 8 p.m. A splendid supper will be provided. Mr J. Olsen will be at the piano. All who attend are assured of an 'enjoyable evening.
The fortnightly dance held under the auspices of 'tile Ladies' Guild of Ven. Bede's 'will take "place in, tihe Parish Hall ,on Tuesday evening next. ( A special attraction will be the 'Cinderella competition dance. These dances in the past have been very popular and those who attend are assured of an enjoyable time.
An entertainment of exceptional merit is being arranged for, by the committee of the Methodist Church to take place in .the Parish Hall on October 12th. . Talent from Palmeiston North and Foxton wall assist with the vocal and instrumental portion of the programme, which we are assured will be something special.
At a well attended meeting of members of ithe Shannon Athletic Club last evening advice was (received from the Manawatu Sub-Centre approving of the Club holding their meeting on Labour Day, Qdfcoibeir 05. Following this advice those .present formed themselves into a corranaittee to draw up a programme, With the result that a first class fare is to be presented. s
A suggestion was made by Mir White at the Athletic Club's meeting last evening, that the Club arrange to hold at an early date a school children's sports meeting, which fixture should be open to children attending the Shannon, Makerua, Toko>marn, Koputaroa, Mangahao and Moutoa Schools. The suggestion meeting' with the approval of those: present, it was decided that Mr White write to the head masters of the -schools mentioned, 'enquiring if they « agreeable to the suggestion, and .that he report to a later meeting of the committee.
Horowhenua Rugby District Council have invited the Manawatu Union to send a rep team to play Horowhenua at Levin on September 25th.

A new departure in a small electric cooker wag being inspected at the Eketahuna Power Board meeting on Friday, when one member seriously inquired whether, - with • an exposed element, there was any danger of "elocution." Hie was assured there was not.
The pollution of County waterraces by* 'allowing ducks and pigs to have access •thereto is to be followed by stringent action where detected. Gr. McLeavey brought up the matter at Saturday's meeting, stating that cows would not drink water that was polluted. ; The chairman said this was prohibited, but a man might have ducks that got into the races without his knowledge. The Engineer was directed to take acton against owners or occupiers of property through which watez-races flowed that are polluted in terms of the Water Supply Act, 1908, with special attention to ducks and pigs. Cr. Jensen said that in some cases sewers were emptied into the races.
The disastrous floods in the Moutoa area have had. an adverse effect on the flax industry. When the flaxmills are running at normal' capacity the monthly output of flax approximates 1400 tons, but at-the present time this quantity is said to have dwindled to scarcely moire than 250 tons, resulting in acute hardship among the flax-workers. "We have plans sent in, even from professional men, on paper that is an absolute disgrace, and it is impossible .to" keep them as a record," remarked "the chairman of the Horowhenua County Council at' Saturday's meeting. The following recommendation by the Works Committee was adopted: "That all persons sending in plans and specifications to the Council, be required to submit the same to the requirements and satisfaction of the County Engineer." A burlesque race took place at the Dannevirke Hum meeting yesterday in the TaJiuraite Hack Steeples, described as one of the greatest fa.rces ever witnessed on a racecourse, the sequel to a ~ chapter of accidents being that Gay Bobbie had the stake money and the tote to himself, although he passed the post a long jvi.>y behind Kovno> and Fairfield. Labour Morn was the pronounced favourite cf the six runners. At the second fence of,the stand double the first time, the. three leaders, Ohorere, Oneroa and Labour (Morn, ran off, leaving Kovno, Gay Bobbie and Fairfield, but all three went inside the flags at the next fence, Gay Bobbie being taken back by his rider. Ohorore and Oneroa hi the meantime, were taken back to the stand double and negotiated .it, ,but the former baulked at the next time of asking. Thus four, were left in the race. Passing the stand the second time, Fairfield Jed Kovno, while Oneroa and Gay Bobbie were three fuirlongS' behind." Oneroa fell along the back and Fairfield fell at the last obstacle but one, but was remounted,' narrowly missing coming to grief at the last. Kovno passed the post oVer 100 yards ahead of, Fairfield, while Gay Bobbie's number was. hoisted in the judge's ibox a, full minute before he arrived. After an inquiry, following a protest on behalf of Gay Bobbie, Kovno and Fairfield were disqualified for not completing the course and the only other contestant to finish, Gay Bobbie, was .awarded all the honours. ' '
