COUNTY OVERSEER.

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT. At a recent meeting the Horowhenua County Council decided to appoint an Overseer and at Saturday's meeting the Works Comjinittee made the following recoinimendations:— ! (a) That applications to close on the 30th instant, be called to fill the position of general overseer for 1 all public works within the County, at a salary'of £6 per week; and means of travelling ■ provided by the Council. (b) That conditions of employment be drawn up by "the Engineer's office. ' ■ [ (c) That the matter of a suitable conveyance be decided after the. appointment. The conditions as drawn up were read to the Council. Cr. MeLeavey asked how the overseer could make out the wages sheet seeing that he would be in all parts of the County.

The Chairman: He does not have to -make it out, but to check it. He will know where the men are working.

Cr. Catley: If a man comes to work late or knocks off early, or does not do the work he should nave' done, the Overseer will report tu the Engineer. ■The Chairman: Unquestionably. That is what you are appointing ■him for. • * „

Cr. Catley doubted whether they would get a man of the qualifications demanded by the conditions for £6 a week. They would have the of debarring a number of men from applying. The Chairman: I don't think so. They will have the effect of debarring many ;whom ytou would not consider at any price. Cr. Catley said they were asking for a, man with the qualifications of the Engineer. He considered the I Overseer's report should "be forwarded by the Engineer to the Council. Cr." Jensen thought the conditions were quite alright. The Works committee's recommendations and conditions were then adopted. "I am glad to get back. You see the directors are doing such a lot I do not agree with that it is just as well for me to get right on to the job," was the way in which a new 'director returned thanks /for his election at the Kaiparoro Cheese Comipany meeting.
