GOLF NOTES.

STARTING PLAY. The local golf course is now, so far in order that play will be commenced to-morrow afternoon, although the official opening to which players from outside clubs will be invited will notbe held for about another fortnight. All local players, members of the Club, prospective members and others interested are cordially invited to ha present to-morrow afternoon. Play will commence as soon as possible after 1.30 p.m. when matches will he arranged. The ladies are kindly requested to provide afternoon tea. The course this year will be a very “sporting” one, there being plenty of provision made for the display of accuracy and nicely judged strength; and, on the other hand, trouble and lost balls should' the shots be pulled or sliced to the extent that some players are capable. The holes range from, 132, yards up to 510 yards. No. 1, of 187 yards, is_ a nice iron shot across a, natural bunker formed by a dry portion .of the river bed; the green being oil the brink of the river and guarded by low dips 1 and rise s in the /ground. No. -2, .of 3()0 yards, starts with a drive up the’ hill and finishes with about 200 yards of flat. No. 4 is a sporty iron shot across a shallow . gully, while Noi. 8 is an easy masliie from the top of the hill on to the flat, an air line of 132 yards. The home hole must he played straight v'iflj tlie river on one side and swamp on the other, distance 420 yards. The Club this year promises to be as strong and the members as enthusiastic as ever; and with Mr Hayes again in charge of the, course players can look forward to another year of splendid sport on good greens and interesting fairways. The handicaps and ladders will be arranged as soon as possible. The first medal match will be early m Mav, and inter-club matches will be held’ during the season.
