FOOTBALL.
In the matches at Otaki on Saturday, County and Otaki played a draw, and Huku beat Otaki Thirds by 8 to Ul. The Rugby season has not, officially, started, but club captains have already arranged matches between the various teams so as to test the strength of their recruits. Saturday’s practice games in Levin showed the following results:— Senior: Hui Mai 9 v. Weraroa 6. Thirds: Weraroa 32 v. Wanderers 3. OTAKI V. COUNTY. A DRAWN GAME. Football opened in Otaki on Saturday when the County team, composed of several of last year’s Otaki players, and players-from the southern end, met the Otaki team. It was thought that the County would have a '‘eake-walk, ’ s but, contrary to expectations, Otaki put up a good game, and emerged from the contest without a score being registered against them. County certainly >had the best, of the game, and Otaki Avere kept defending for the greater portion, but it redounds to their credit that every rush was stayed. County passed well, their aim on each occasion being well directed, but Otaki were equal, if not superior, at collaring. The hall was Avell fielded by both sides, and kicking strong. Naturally, players Avere beloAv form, but for an opening match did well. Gl’eesou proved a tiger for work, and was Otaki’s main forAvard although others did well. Most of the Otaki backs put up a very creditable performance. McDonald was County’s main man, in fact the best player on the ground; and he ran in great style. However, collaring was deadly, and he failed to roach the line despite his determined efforts. Place-kicking Avas Aveak, and players Avould do well to cultWate this. It often means the Avinning of a game. Mr. Henare Tahiwi was referee. Better management of tlnx football field is wanted in Otaki. On Saturday spectators croAA r dcd on to the side-lines, , and despite the fact that the game was stopped so as to make spectators go back there was no move, and in consequence those who did keep back saw but little of the game, while the pressure on the line hampered players. Unless something is done to keep the crowd’in check football will be on the down-grade in a very short time.
