SHANNON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The above meeting was held in the Schoolroom on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs R. L. Tippler (chairman), Blackwood, Lankshear, Brann, Phillips, Burns and Watkins. Apologies lor absence was received from Messrs Brown and Roberts. CORRESPONDENCE. From secretary, Wellington Education Board, re ground improvements at School, stating the Board is in .sympathy with the Committee in relation to the acquiring of additional land, although it is a difficult matter to get a grant Where the area already in possession amounts to five acres, the Board is, however, addressing the Director with a view to a grant. Alternately, if it cannot be obtained, if the. committee will devote £3O raised so that subsidy can (be claimed on.it to the purchase, the* Board will be prepared to increase by that amount the sum allotted to tar sealing of the drill area. With regard to the site the Board had no valuation before it The Committee resolved to forward the £3O. From Education Board in reference to Committee's request to rent a temporary hall to accommodate the children from the class room whoch was condemned. The Board regretted that it must decline the request, pointing out that there is already more space than what is. available -at many schools. The room in question has since been painted in the interior and as it has ventilation on. two sides it is by no means an unhealthy room if it is not overcrowded. The letter concluded by stating that trie Board trusted the committee would recognise that it was doing its very best for the school within tin. 1 limit of the means at its disposal, remodelling, of residence, asphalting, painting and present application for increased area. On the other hand the Board is very desirous to do its best not only for this school but for others.—Received.
GEkNERAL. It was -resolved that a' letter .of thanks be forwarded to the Borough Council for their generous supply of metal in front of the school gates. Mr Tippler thought the time Was now ripe for school colours and a motto to be adopted. Several suggestions were 'made, but finally the matter was left to. W White to bring down suggestions at the next meeting. The chairman, in reporting on the success of the school picnic held at Plimmerton, paid a compliment to the" members of the teaching -staff for the assistance they gave the committee in ' looking after the children during the train journey.—lt was decided that a letter be forwarded to the teachers expressing the Committee's thanks for taking charge of the children. A hearty vote of thanks was. also accorded the public of (Shannon and district for their generous support in the way of donations towards the picnic. . The.headmaster (Mr White) reported that the attendance for the past five weeks was as follows:—326, 343, 341, 343 and 340, the average number on the roll being 363. The accounts were then passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
