CYCLE TRACK TO BE PUT DOWN.
ON RECREATION GROUND. A deputation consisting of Messrs T. White, J. Curran, A. Birchall, and D. McLaggan, 0 n behalf of the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, waited on the Borough Council'on Tuesday evening, with a view to try and work out, a scheme to put down a cycle track in the Recreation Ground. Mr -White was the first speaker. He said' that in 1928 1 a Queen Carnival was held and the'sum of £577 was raised for. the purpose of toproving the Domain.. In this effort "the various sports bodies had rendered general assistance/ Albouit £470 had already been spent, leaving a balance oil £lO7 wftiich had since ibeen handed over by the Executive (to the • Reserves G'oinmiittee off the Council. At previous sports meetings the cycle events had proved' a big draw, the track used on those occasions 'having been put down by the. memlbera themselves, but it had since ibfeen destroyed to enable impnovemefnte to. be made to the ground. The deputation now' desired" ■ the Council to put down a 440 yards itracik, banked at the ends, to be ' used for running and cycle events; which he pointed out would not, only toe of considerable benefit to the Sports Clubs, 'but a public asset;. He instanced how the Paraparamlmu ( Club by iniproving their ground had developed into a big gathering, and sthe same could be done in Shannon far more easily. It would not inter- : fere with the football area, as it would be outside the touch line, fwjiile cricketers would have their pitch in the centre. Later a picket : fence could Jbe erected to enclose ; the sports area. In. regard to the cost they asked that a fair proportion ■toe allowed from the fund the Council had in hand. The cost of the work was estimated not to exceed £7O- and probably It could be done lor £SO. Finally, he saflfl, that -although reluctant to say so, that unless the cycle events can be included the sports would have to be abandoned. ~ „., ..„,„ Mr J. Gun-ran endorsing Mr White s remarks said that the track would be a big asset and if gome on with he felt sure the Council would be willing to assist the CM>. Revenue would be derived from i* which would help to pay it off. _ Mr Birchall said the football club was agreeable to sacrifice one ground to have the track. ™nv,t P In reply to Op. Butt, Mr White stated .that if the track was ™™^f a rectangular angle the corneis would need to be banked. K a*al, m I shape only the ends would need ibanking. , ~ , ,„■, The Mayor pointed out that an-, though the Club had been handed £lO7 by the Executive, some of this bad been expended and they . only had £BS in hand. He said supposing the Council did agree to allocate £/0 and the work cost more, would tihe Cluto be prepared to And the balance. Mr White said he was safe in saying the Club would help materially tn cLSS'i.S't The deputation then withdrew whale W Council considered the request during which it was pointed out that a certain amount of money was necessary to fence the paddling pool and ladies' lavatory, and to plan shrubs Cr Curran then moved that f sum'not to exceed £6O be allocated for the work, providing he Clubo n a working bee to assist the Council With the work.-This. was agreed to On the deputation returning and the Council's decision being placed before then, Mr White stated the deputation felt grateful to the Count for the manner in which they had met then, and he felt sure he work would be done within the amount estimated.
