SHANNON’S CASE.
CORDIAL RECEPTION IN. WELLINGTON. Reference was made to- the above matter at Tuesday’s meeting of the Shannon Borough Council. Cr Downes and Mr J. T. Bovis (Town Clerk), who gave evidence on behalf of the Borough 'Council before the Parliamentary Petitions Committee last week in respect to the petition for a new bridge across tlie Manawatu river, reported that they had been .well received and that ft had been recommended’ that the member for the district should call -a meeting of representatives of all the local bodies interested for the purpose of settling the question. Later -they had waited on Mt Hanna, chairman of the Main Highway Board, who had placed a, different aspect on the position. He informed them he had been in cominunication with the Horowhenua County Council on tlie -matter and lie was asking them to take immediate steps to take action and thatl if something was not done within a reasonable time, he, as chairman of the Main Highway Board would take- the matter in hand. Tire Town Clerk said since returning lie had received advice from the Horowhenua County Council that the bridge question will be discu-s-sod at their meeting on Saturday. , . The deputation spoke in eulogistic terms of the courteous manner in which they Were received everywhere, and especially of the assistance rendered them by. the member for the district, Mr J- Linklater, M.-P.
On the motion -of Cr. Downes, seconded by Cr. Spencer,, it was resolved that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Mr Linklater for the help and kindness he had given the deputation on
their visit to Wellington. On the motion of Cr. Thwaites tlie report was received and the deputation were congratulated on the apparent success of their visit. DOMAIN FENCE,
Cr. Richardson said the Reserve Committee had met Mr Brown, the contractor for the erection of the fence around the Domain, and an inspection had been made of the fence and the faults pointed out. Mr Brown said he would do nothing and refused to come to any settlement. He wanted all or nothing. However, later on the matter was fixed up. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. Butt) explained that the matter had been settled by Mr Brown agreeing to- £2 Ips being deducted from his contract
price. „ , The action of the Reserves Committee was approved -of and it was decided that the alteration to tne fence be left to- the Reserves Committee to deal with.. Accounts were then passed for payment.
