AUSTRALIAN BUTTER.
"MADE FROM DOGS* MILK." SYDNEY, Aug. 1-2. The circulation of an amazing rumour in the Malay States that Australian butter is made from dogs' milk has seriously perturbed the local shippers. As the dog is as abhorrent to the Malays, who are Mohammedans, as the pig is, the effect on Australian trade in butter can be imagined. The statements are contained in a letter received from the Lismore (New South Wales) Chamber of Commerce by the Customs Department. The Chamber thinks this prejudice would be best overcome if some Malay citizens could be brought to Australia to inspect the process of dairy produce manufacture.
Mr Roland Green, M.P., the Federal member for the district, through whom the letter was transmitted, has received an acknowledgment stating that inquiries were being made. He believes that the story was circulated by a business competitor in Malay. Mr R. Cook, M.P., who also represents a dairying district, said in England there were people, who really believed the Kangaroo brand on Australian butter meant that the butter was marie from kangaroos' milk. In China and in the Far East generally, where Australian jams showing a parrot on the label are received, keen disappointment is, it is stated, felt by purchasers when they find that the tins do not contain stewed [ parrots.
