VALEDICTORY.

MR W. S. PARK ENTERTAINED

A very pleasant function took place , in the Levin Club on Friday evening, , when the member gathered to .say . farewell to Mr Park. Apologies lor \ unavoidable absence were received j from Messrs W. Vickers, W. Ryder, and Rod McDonald. - Mr'T. Hobson, in presenting Mr Park with a couple of very fine Petone rugs and travelling cushions ior himself and Mrs Park, said that those .present were gathered to wish bon voyage to a very old member oi the Club, who was going to England for a six months trip. Mr Park, he said, had been one of the most constant clubmen in the town, and one whom the other members were, always glad to see. Everyone was sorry to lose iiim even if only temporarily, but personally he considered mat Mr Park was taking his trip at the right lime If a man did not travel w.nen voung lie often found that when he uecam'e old he had lost the faculty of eniovment. He was also pleased to make this presentation to Mr Park for another reason, and one which might possibly surprise members. That was as a recognition of their guest's unfailing charity where any deserving cause' was brought under his notice. He was not a man, who advertised his good works, but he, as Mayor, had had to approach him on numerous occasions, and knew that a necessitous case had only to be brought to his notice to gam his active sympathy. Further when lie o-ave he gave generously. (Applause). He hoped Mr Park would accept the o-ih as was linteiid/ed: fiot for us value, but as. an expression oi the goodwill o_f the members of the Cluo. (Applause). -,-,•, Mr F G Roe said he would like to endorse the remarks of the former speaker. He had. known Mr Park from the time he came to Levin l« years ago. During that tune he had been a good citizen, and had done his share towards the progress at the town. As had heen said by Mr Hobson, he was taking his trip at the right time, and be wished him a very pleasant one, and a safe return to L Mr i 'R. J. Foss and Dr. Bryson also spoke. , Mr Park, who on rising to reply, was greeted with applause, said he thanked those present from the bottom of his heart for the very handsome present he had received. He was sure that Mrs Park would join with him in his appreciation, and he could assure those present, that valuable as the presents were, that that would be merely a secondary consideration in ■comparison with the appreciation of the goodwill which had prompted the gift. He could say that now that the time came to leave, ho found himself by no means e ated He could say most earnestly that whatever pleasure lay before him, nothing would give him greater satisfaction than to. return to his own little' coterie in the Club. (Applause) Win on behalf of Mrs Park and hfmself he thanked members tor their very handsome .gift. The singing of "For <he s a jolly good fellow brought the function to a- close.
