ATHLETIC NOTES.

COUNTRY CLUBS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS AT LEVIN.

Very satisfactory nominations have been received by the Levin A.A. and Cycling Club for the Country Clubs Championships to he held on the Levin Park Domain on Easter Saturday. R. A. Rose, the Australian and New Zealand champion long distance runner, is a certain competitor. By his performances this season he has proved beyond douht his capabilities, and as recently as Saturday week rail a mile in 4.24, only six seconds outside the New Zealand record. At the preseut\time it is doubtful if there are iialf-a-dozen men in the world who are his equal over his own particular distance, if he were taken in hand and trained properly, lie has a peculiar loping style, but a splendid stride, and is never done with in a race. Once he gets up with his field he is an assured winner. So far as recording times goes, he does not know hia own capability as he has never been JreaHy pushed. Should the weather continue fine, and the track consequently prove fast, it is possible that the public will on Easter Saturday, see him break his own 3-mile record which he established m the New Zealand Championships at Wanganui. , . . Dufresne, the local champion, showed by his performance in Wellington last Saturday that he is getting back into form, and there has been plenty of time since -then to still further improve. He will certainly make Rose run his best. Dufresne is a good man when fit, as he proved last year. " The promising young sprinters, Eastwood (Masterton) and Strange (Palmerston North), should provide thrilling races, and as both are looked upon by their respective clubs as coming champions, good times should be recorded. . Nangioni, the Wellington provincial 440yds hurdle champion is due to make his appearance, and as this race has drawn a good field, he may perhaps find a dark horse among his opponents* . .. The Field Events have filled. well, and such exponents as Harvey the New Zealand champion, Lozelle, Roberts, and Morgan; should providemany interesting contests. “Buster” Wilton, the New Zealand long jump champion, is also to be present, and as everyone likes to see a proved champion perform, interest will be keen in these events. The ladies’ entries include Miss GUI, lQOyds champion, Henderson, who at the present is showing good form, and Hay vice and Porter (Wellington) who were recently successful in Christchurch. ’ Miss Porter won the pendant for the most points scored by any lady competitor in Wellington during the season. , .. .. . The Cycle races have also attracted a: large number of competitors, including T. Oakley, and C. W. Curtis, who represented New Zealand last week in the test races against the Australians. Others will be Lett ;Wellington), and Scoto-ie, the promising local rider, Wildbore, Gapper, and Capper, as well as many others from outside the district. So far as the calibre of the athletes to take part in the coming event goes, it could not be bettered in the Dominion, and only the patronage ot the public is required to make me meeting the greatest success ever attained in this class of, sport in the district.
