MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hoaowiienua county Council was held on sutuiuay, the chairman (cr. G. A. iVionKj uresiaing. over a full Council. UOaU AT MAKERUA.

Cr. Barber moved in this direction—Carried. PROVIDING LEGAL ACCESS.

The Railway Department wrote ex pressing willingness to vest in the Council for road purposes, a piece oi land lying parallel with the railway line, opposite Mr C. H. Spiers’ property at Shannon. The proposal to give up for road purposes the railway land at light angles to the rati way line on which the present road crossing exists was not agreed to. The chairman stated that from the plans submitted it would appear that in the near future the Council -would find it necessary tq apply to -the Railway Department lor a considerable amount of land. It wquld appear that a fairly long length of the main road ill this locality was on Government property. However, this would have to. be verified by a survey.

The letter was received. HOKIO BEACH ROAD. From the Levin Borough Council stating that they had recognised their decision in regard to the Hokio Beach Road, and had decided to contribute the sum of £25 towards cost of maintenance. In making the grant the Borough Council made the request that the money he spent in the provision of passing places along the narrow portions of the road, and also in clearing up the sides., the work to be done as soon as possible. Cr. Harkness stated that he was very pleased to note that the Borough recognised that they were co-owners in this road, arid he. thought the least the Council could do was to accede to the request of the Borough Council and put in the. passing places asked for. He moved that a vote of thanks be passed to the Borough Council and tliat the passing places be constructed. This was carried. WANDERING STOCK.

Mr C. Sawyer, Te Hero, wrote complaining of a neighbour’s cattle wandering on the Waitoheki Road, and damaging his fences. He asked that the County Ranger he instructed to take action. - The matter was referred to the Ranger for attention. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr W. N. Anderson) reported as follows: Although the weather was somewhat broken at the commencement of the period, work has gone on in a ■satisfactory manner. Owing in the very heavy motor traffic during' the holidays the main roads were considerably damaged, but are in fair order again. I have nothing of importance to report on in the Tokomaru ■ Riding. The season’s, metalling should bo completed in about ten days. Wirokino Riding.—Everything in this riding is in good order. The main metalling for the current year is completed. The main roads, are in good order and a number of the district roads have received attention. The Levin. Sawmilling GQ. has put out a quantity of-metal on the Tara--rua road and although more metal' is required the road is greatly improved. The survey, of the Waitarere road is in hand and 1 hope to be able to make a start with the grading work within tiie next few. days. Otaki Riding—Everything in this riding is in fair order. The formation work on the Waikawa South Road is practically completed. I hope to start lancing at the beginning of next week arid a start will he maue .with the metalling at an early date. The formation and fasoining oi tliebig sand cutting on the Waikawa Beach Road extension was completed before the holidays and the balance of the formation and metalling will be proceeded with on the. completion, of the Waikawa South road. The Kuku water races ore at present receiving attention. 1 would like to draw the Council’s attention to the prac tice of people interfering with the intake and di vert ing boxes on this particular race and would suggest that the Council offer a reward to. anyone giving information which would lead to a conviction.

Te Hioiro Riding.—'Hie main road m this riding suffered considerably during the holidays but with constant attention it is. being kept in fair order. i am very sorry to have to report that two of the. surfacemen in this riding met with serious accidents during the period. P. Hunt had his leg broken by receiving a kick from a horse and A. Thomson received serious internal injuries through being thrown from a dray on the Mangaone Gorge road. Both men are in the Otaki Hospital. Road Roller. Just prior tq the holidays a large section of one 'Of the roller wheels broke, which necessitated the ordering of another pair of wheels from England. In the meantime the roller is not in use. Motor Driver Licenses.—Under the Motor Vehicles Act it is now compulsory for all motor drivers to have a license to drive. As this part of the Act comes, into force on April Ist. T would suggest that the Council discuss this question at the earliest date so that these licenses can be issued before the Act comes into force and thus save a rush at the last minute. The report was adopted.
