WEST COAST ASSOCIATION MEETS
That a good deal of .success had been met with in the Association’s endeavours to have rairy companies co-operate in the matter of refusing to accept creamowhich had been rejected by other factories-was reported by the president, Mr S. A* Broadbelt , (Levin) at yesterday’s < meeting of -the executive, of the. Manawatu and West Coast Dairy. Companies' . Association. Others present were: Messrs H. E. Pacey, J. Boyce and T. Ranford. . The Taihape Co-operative Dairy Company,. Ltd., wrote stating that in the matter of the Association's letter' regarding; co-operating in refusing to accept bad cream, it was thought that proprietary- companies in the Taihape district should sign up. It was - also asked ■ whether the Association had taken up the matter of the drivers’ award, as that would act prejudicially to companies owing to the unusual hours worked. The , chairman remarked that in regard to the cream question, an interview was more desirable than correspondence. It was decided to reply that the drivers’ award did not affect this district, but the Wanganui district. Refrigerated Space.
The National Dairy Association of New Zealand, Ltd., wrote, in reply to tlie Association's letter in . connection with'the allocation of refrigerated space at various grading ports, and stating that it endeavoured to ensure that each port had produce allocated in such a manner that stores were cleared of the produce up to the same date. However, when allocations were made they were usually four to six weeks ahead of the loading dates of steamers, and in many cases - the produce to be shipped in steamers had then not actually been manufactured. It ; was endeavoured to place every factory, on an equal basis. Regulation of Shipments.
“I fear we have- fallen in again. I am losing faith, in the Board,’’ remarked Mr Boyce, upon, a letter being read from the Dairy, Produce Control Board, which stated that it agreed with the Association that the regulation of shipments was a very important question, and stating that it was doing its utmost to improve matters in this connection. The chairman remarked that the Association’s questions had not been fully answered, and it was de cided- should procure fuller replies. A suggestion by Mr Pacey that the Association ask the National Dairy Association to publish the amount of dairy produce carried by .each ship along with .the. .date of clearance,. was approved. ' • Control Board Extravagant.
A letter was received from the Glen Oroua Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., stating that, at a meeting of it) Board of Directors, it had been decided to call attention at the next meeting of the Association to the extravagance of the Dairy Control Board in the matter oi the-recent telegrams received by secretaries ; of dairy companies concerning insurance.
.Mr Boyce said that recently the Board had .spent a lot of . money, and proceeded to . quote instances pertaining to the transmission of telegrams.
Mr Pasey said that this was not a case for .criticism, as the. occasion had been a special one. “At any rate, I am pleased to set the Association taking an interest in the • operations of the Board,” said the chairman, “but we must not take action and utter-protests on minor matters,”
Mr Pacey said it was more important to see that they got courteous replies to questions put to the Board, for the the previous letter was unsatisfactory. The letter under discussion was re* ceived.
