TRADE WITH THE EAST
That there exists a wonderful opportunity for opening up and developing business with some of our Eastern friends is being gradually brought home to every producer in New Zealand. On his return from the East, the Deader of the Opposition, Mr Wilford, was so impressed with what he saw, and with what was being done by Australia already in this direction, that he never lost an opportunity of impressing the New Zealand producers with the importance pf this market.
Another advocate of Eastern trade possibilities has just returned to New Zealand by the Tahiti, in the person of Mr G. V. Pearce, a sheep and cattle farmer of Kakaramea. "There are big possibilities of trade with the East in first-class'New Zealand food supplies, if a ' sufficient volume of business can be done to warrant the regular running of steamers equipped with refrigerated space,” said Mr Pearce, when discussing this matter in Wellington. Mr Pearce stated that he left New Zealand in February, and went from Sydney through the Malay State® Singapore, the Philippine Islands, Hongkong, and China. He motored for 500 miles through the Malay States.
“I interviewed a friend of mine, a shipowner, at Hongkong,” said Mr Pearce, “and he promised that he would come down to New Zealand and see if it .would be possible to put a direct refrigerated steamer on to ply between the East and the Dominion. 1 have no doubt that this would be possible, as these Eastern countries are at present in a very flourishing condition financially, especially at Hongkong.”
