TARARUA EAST ROAD.
COUNTY. TO TAKE ACTION. The question o.f maintenance of the Turarua East Road .was again ventidated at Saturday’s, meeting of the Horowhenua County Council when a letter was received from the. Kevin Co-op. Dairy Co., requesting that the eastern portion of the Tararua Road be repaired, as at present it was almost impassable lor the company s cream lorry. The chairman stated that this was the road which had been cut up by tne Levin Sawmilling Go., arid it was now time that the Council took action. Cr. Broadbelt said that the- road was practically impassable, and Re ratepayers of. the locality had been very patient in the matter. • They recognised the Council’s- difficulty, but something would have to be done, in the matter. Cr. Harkness said that he agreed with the chairman, that action should be taken. He would like, to see tne company given one chance, and if that were not taken, that they should be proceeded against, - „ „ ' In answer to a question the. Engineer stated that it would cost about £iso to put the road in order. The chairman said that the. position Avas this: A conference had been held between the Council and representatives of the company, when an offer had been made by the Council, but nothing had been received from the company to say whether they would accept or not. He. would now move that the company be given l* days’ notice tQ repair the road and if nothing be done, at the end d that time that they he proceeded against. He moved in this direction. Cr. Harkness seconded the motion. The Engineer stated that an offer €f £6O had been made by the County Council towards the cost of the work. Besides this he had given the. company to understand that he. was prepared to let them have me.tal from the County’s pit, this meaning a saving of about 2s 6d per yard. He would suggest that this offer be now withdrawn. ' The following resolution was carried; “That the Levin Sawmilling Co. be given notice to proceed with repair of the Tararua East Road within U days, the work to be completed within 28 days’ of notice, failing which action be taken.”
