RAID ON MIRANUI.
OLD OFFENDER CHARGED. A man named John Mylchrust Quayle was arraigned at Palmerston yesterday on two charges of theft. Tiliq first was that, on December 12, at Miunui, he stole a suit case, and contents valued at £l9 7s, a pair of trousers valued at £l,'-and a felt hat valued at £1 ss, from the dweling of w. R. Saunders. The second charge was that, at the same date, at Miranui, he stole two razors vaiuetT at £1 3s 6d and a fountain pen. valued at 2s. 6d from the dwelling of A. E. and G, T. Gillum.
Accused pleaded guilty to both charges, Senior-Sergeant O j Grady said that accused liad been working at the Miranui mill and had Stolen the articles described from the tents of some , of the men employed there. There Avere several previous convictions for theft against ■ accused. Asked if he had anything to say, accused replied that his lapse was caused through drink. “Since. 1920 you have put in nearly all your time in gaol,”’ said His. Worship, “You will be sentenced to six. . months’ har<i labour on the major charge and one month on the lesser count, the ternis to be concurrent.” He added that accused’s lapses, did not appear to be due to drink. “You had better be careful, for you are going the right Way to be declared an habitual criminal,” said Mr Stout. An order for the return of the stolen -goods to their owners was -made.
