JUNIOR FINAL.
HUI MAI 9, SHANNON NIL. The final of the junior competition of the Horoiwhenua Union, was played on the Levin Domain on Saturday. The ground was slightly heavy, but in good playing order, and the weather fine. Hui Mai was rather the heavier team, and kicked off with the advantage of the breeze. . The Hui Mai fullback mulled, the return kick and Shannon pressed down on the opposition line in a solid forward rush. Hui Mai cleared with a line kick and play hovered round halfway for some time. Hui Mai was getting the ball from the line-outs and tried passing among the backs, but Shannon, tackling well, smothered their efforts and little ground was gained. The Hui Mai forwards then took a hand and the backs supporting well, just failed to get home
with a couple of passing rushes. Things were getting interesting wnen a. Summon player was penalised lor Obstruction anfi Nees (Hui Mai) kicked a goal With a nicely judged effort. Hui Mai 3, Shannon 0, Shannon was kept constantly on the defence at this stage, the’ Hui Mai forwards breaking through in good style and making nice openings mr the backs, whose movements were, however, too. stow to he effective. From a syds scrum, the ball dribbled out among .the backs and Nees pickiiig up, sent qn to Gray wlio got over at the corner. Nees missed with the kick- Hui Mai 6, Shannon 0. Shannon forwards now put more ginger into their piay and gave Hur Mai a warm time lor five minutes, an dxciting tussle taking place in Hui /Mai’s twenty-five, but the defence .of the southern team held good and fiaif time came witn play back in inid field. Following the kick-off, play was Vjery haggled, neither side snowing any combination. Alter an uninteresting period, Silbury picked up in the loose and evading . a couple of Shannon players, made a good run down the line to. score at the corner. The kick narrowly missed. Hui Mai 9, Shannon 0. Shannon making the game tight worked within striking distance, hut their efforts lacked is ting at the critical movement and Hui Mai soon had play back in mid-field again. Shannon at this stage was having much the better of the play and kept Hui Mai penned in their twenty-five continuously, but Hui Mai’s defence stood the test and the whistle went without further score. Mr. R. Sloan controlled the game.
