THE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE—WHERE?
In the House last week Mr McKay (Bawkes Bay) asked the Minister of Agriculture, whether, in view of the proposed establishment of two agricultural colleges in the North Island, lie will give favour, able consideration to the establishment of one of them in the Hawkes Bay province, assisted irom the proceeds of the Howard Bequest bequeathed for that purpose; and whether it. will be supplemented with a grant from the Government? The Hon. Mr Nosworthy (Minister of Agriculture) replied: The ’establishment of an agricultural college in any locality may be expected to. involve the granting of a considerable subsidy by the Government in one form o’r another, and this would apply even if the institution had the benefit of the revenue from the Howard bequest, as the latter, together with the fees and other receipts, would not he sufficient to provide for the initial and annual expenditure on land, buildings, furniture, equipment, staff, board, maintenance, etc. Finance is thus a very important factor Which, must he considered. Havipg regard to current circumstances the immediate establishment of two agricultural colleges in the North Island is not contemplated, but when it becomes necessary to decide upon a site for one this question will have very careful consideration from; all points of view.
