RENOVATING THE GREEN.
A general discussion took place on the levelling, top-dressing and improvement of the green. An expert’s, opinion was received on the matter.' He pointed o.ut that generally an annual top-dressing was very essential to a bowling green. It often happened that greens were in a precarious condition at the end oi a very hard and much-used season ;und this was mostly evident in a thin turf and hare patches in places. Iu the first place, they should ' mow the lawn with a machine, cutting the grass as short as possible, then rake and cross rake the surface with an iron tooth rake, taking care to thoroughly open up the soil. It was well to remember, that the more the existing plant appeared to be damaged, short of actually putting it out, the better" would be the results and that unless the surface was loosened, sufficiently the roots of the young grass would not be able to penetrate the old turf and consequent- | ly they would die and the whole work prove a, failure. There were two ways to complete the Avork* the first being to. sow the seed on the raked surface, choosing a dry day. The seed should be sown thickly or thinly according to the state of the turf. Cover, the seed with prepared soil. The alterna. tive was to scatter prepared soil over the area under treatment before sowing the seed. Then to sow and to cover in the usual manner. The finishing touch was given with a light roller.
It was pointed out tliat it was too late in the season to -commence topdressing and it was resolved' that the heads he raked up and loosened and that brown-top seed be sown so as to make the best job possible tor this season Avith a view to getting an expert to have the green top-dressed at the end of the .season. It Avas resolved to purchase a neAV mower at a cost of £ls 10s, and that applications be called for the position of.caretaker for the bowling and croquet. greens. A CROQUET CLUB. Mr Beard said he would' be calling a meeting shortly of all interested in croquet and horn present indications he felt sure they could expect strong support. The sum of £25. Avas earmarked lor putting the croquet green in order, and buying the necessary gear to sunt the club I-t Avas resolved to submit the fol-lowing-proposals to the croquet meeting: That a- change of 10s per member be made,by the Bowling Club-for ttie first • year, members to form their own committee to- manage the Club, they to be allowed to~ in crease their membership fee sufficient to. cover anticipated expenses, pir the croquet club be charged £ls -per annum for the ground, the Bowling Club to pay the caretaker.
Before the meeting closed the opportunity Avas taken to congratulate til to new president, Mr T. Gardner. Mr Murray said lie Avas one of the pioneers of the district, and it was very gratifying to. see a man of bis standing occupying the .position, and the members wished him a very successful and pleasant term of office.
