Monk, lixo cnairman, presiding* ' . i- , A - furling, manager lor Mr r Eiyant, Shannon, wrote stating that a drain opposite Mr Bryant s property, required cleaning, ana suggesting that he be given authority. u> iet the work. ■
The Shannon Borough. Council wrote dealing with the same matter to the ellect. that a property-owner had put a flood gate ■in the County drain, known as Stansell's Drain, such flood gate having the effect ol- turning- the .water on to, and seriously damaging adjoining property. , ° Cr. Barber stated that it wds the overflow of Stans ell’s drain which flooded Bryant’s property. , He (Cr.' Barber) .had looked over the property and found that two or three small Water courses had been concentrated and brought, through ’ the town •in a drajin, aiterwairds being, allo wed *to go through the properties lower down at will. He understood that the cleaning of this drain had been done previously, half by the County and half by Mr Bryant. The matter had been complicated by flood-gates which the Public Works had put in. The matter was referred to the members, for the Riding and- Engineer, with power to act. • l'- - Mr H. L. Tippler wrote, through- his solicitor, in respect of .a drain*which is carrying the water of a diverted stream., draining some 500 acres, and which in flood time overflows and submerges some 30 acres of his property. He asked that the drain, which was only 18 inches deep, should be substantially deepened so las to prevent future flooding.Cr. Barber stated , that, the County had never diverted any stream to his knowledge. The Railway Company had-closed the water course in building the railway, and this was respond sible for the trouble. The flood gate,' question also arose. The Makerua i people had- banked their properties, and this caused the- water to -hank up. ! • .
The chairman said that, the position had better he discussed on., the ground. , On his motion a committee consisting of the members of the Riding, chairman, and engineer, was appointed to. deal with the matter; - with power to act. . • TOKOMARU ROADING SCHEME.
I .Mr H. R. Farquhar, licensed surveyor, forwarded a plan of a proposed reading giving access from TokomaDi |to Temrikanui and Ashlea] also a. petiition from the owners of adjoining 'properties asking that the said properties be formed into a special rat-
ing district for the purpose -of raising a loan lor the work. * The chairman said that there was one thing in connection with this matter which was worth discussing. There was some doubt .of obtaining the necessary' money from the State Advances. ; Only £SOOQ could be raised by a local body through the State Advances in one year and the road would. absorb the whole of this sum. He did not consider - that the whole of the available money from this source should to this work and so block all small loans such as the Waitarere. He would suggest that a committee consisting of Crs. Whyte, Barber, himself and the engineer, be appointed to confer { with the people interested and endeavour to get them to raise the money from some other sou rce.—Carried. BEACH ROAD, The County Solicitors forwarded for signature by the chairman,; 9, memorial to His Excellency the Governor, in regard, to the'proposed LevinHokio BeaCh Road deviation.—'Received. •
Mr S. Jones wrote' that in conse* quence of his digging a four foot drain through his property on. Beach road, Weraroa, he. would be glad if the Council would lower the culvert across the road a depth of 2ft.—Referred to the councillors for the Riding and Engineer , with power to act.
GENERAL. • iw£:r. Broadbelt started that he had been speaking to Mr McGill re the Aratangata drain, and Mr McGill had told him that the 'flood-gate had scoured out badly and needed repair. He had asked that a better floodgate be put in, and stated that he was prepared to assist with the work. Councillors expressed satisfaction at the attitude, disclosed by Mr Me-' Gill’s offer and recommended that the matter be inquired into. WAITARERE ROAD. Cr. Galley asked if the Waitarere loan had been completed. The County Clerk stated that the loan had been gazetted so that, the Government was definitely committed to the loan. When they would get the money was another matter.
