ACCIDENT AT ARAPETI TUNNEL.

A painful accident occurred to Mr W. Bird, an employee at Mangaliao, on Sunday while walking through -the. No. 2 tunnel. Mr Bird had proceeded some distance through the tunnel, when he came to a fall of earth and while examining same a further fall took' place, burying Mr Bird up to the waist. Although suffering much pain the ‘unfortunate man endeavoured to release one of liis legs. Fortunately a couple Of mein from Arapeti discovered him and lost no time in releasing him. -One of liis legs was fractured below the knee and he also suffered several abrasions; and alter receiving medical attention was removed to tlie Palmerston North Hospital.
