POWER BOARD SECRETARIES.
A MATTER OF SALARY,
The Waiiganui-Rangitikei Rower Board decided to appoint a managing secretary at a salary of. £7OO a year. Mr A. Robinson said he did not like to traverse the action of the committee set up in recommending .
the salary should be £7OO, but he considered that it was outrageous. Mr A. H. Rogers: It looks more like employing a colonial secretary than a board secretary. Mr Rohmson moved that the salary be £SOO a year. Hie said tlie appoin tee would not have more to do than the secretary of a local body.
Mr. Morrison said their iueas were too big. There were any amount of qualified mien who would .accept £SOO a year. There were county clerks getting £3OO and £350 a year, and doing the work well, Mr Bignall said that in the South Island x £6so was being offered for a similar position. They wanted a good businessman Who would make a success ol 'the business. A good man would save his salary. Mr Loughnau said a lot of business ability and knowledge would be required. It was possible that a man would be cheap at £IOOO a year as the right £nan would sav© his salary over and over again. Mr Purnell said that the committee were unanimous in "offering £7OO. They did not want to teach a man his business.
Mr Dalrymple said the capital cost had to be kept under control, and only a good man could do that. The motion was put and lost and the ' committee'ts recommendation adopted.
